Prepare yourselves for the shocking truth: a staggering 70% of American beachgoers admit to relieving themselves in the ocean, leaving a foul mark on our most cherished shores. This July 4th weekend is set to see 72.2 million Americans traveling, and the question looms large: will they treat our beaches with the respect they deserve?
As families flock to the sand under a celebratory sun, gleeful freedom-seekers create a chaotic scene. A recent study reveals that an alarming 92% of beachgoers engage in downright rude behavior—from blasting loud music to invading others’ space. But it gets worse. Instead of seeking a bathroom, they are opting for the ocean as their personal toilet.

Let’s break down the audacity of it all. While 18% find this beach etiquette appalling, the majority seem unfazed by their lack of consideration. Beachgoers are prioritizing their convenience over common decency, all while creating a less enjoyable experience for everyone else. Bizarrely, nearly half of this group gives no regard to the beach rules, indulging in prohibited alcohol, with 38% stealing sand and shells.
And it doesn’t stop there. Almost 30% knowingly blare their obnoxious playlists, as if the beach is their personal concert hall. Meanwhile, 2 in 10 indulge in smoking, suffocating their fellow beach lovers with noxious fumes.
Shockingly, while 82% of participants say littering is the biggest annoyance at the beach, only 1 in 4 take responsibility for their mess. We can only infer that a certain level of self-awareness is sorely lacking in today’s beach culture.
It seems the younger generations need a serious wake-up call. Gen Z leads the pack in rowdy behavior, with 30% admitting to inconsiderate antics—much more than their older counterparts, the Millennials (26%) and Gen X (23%). A generational divide is unmistakably evident when it comes to respecting our beaches.
As you prepare to enjoy the long weekend, think twice about your impact on America’s shores. If you seek a peaceful spot to unwind, consider heading to Cooper’s Beach in Southampton—ranked as the best beach in the nation by Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman, affectionately known as “Dr. Beach.” Let’s protect this beautiful environment for future generations to cherish.
