In a stunning display of law enforcement action, former boxer Julio César Chávez Jr. has been arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and is now facing imminent deportation to Mexico. This troubling development underscores a glaring failure in our immigration system—a failure underscored by Chávez’s overdue visa status and the deception he employed while applying for a green card.

Just days after suffering a defeat in the boxing ring to influencer Jake Paul, Chávez’s criminal history caught up with him. This is no mere athlete slipping through the cracks; this man is deeply entwined with the Sinaloa Cartel, a ruthless organization labeled a Foreign Terrorist Organization. He is currently facing organized crime charges in Mexico for his involvement in the trafficking of firearms and ammunition.

The facts are clear. According to Tricia McLaughlin, Assistant Secretary at the Department of Homeland Security, Chávez, identified as an affiliate of the Sinaloa Cartel, has an active arrest warrant for serious crimes. It is unconscionable that under the Biden administration, this criminal was allowed back into the United States despite being flagged as a significant public safety risk.

The former administration’s lack of prioritization regarding Chávez’s swift removal is astonishing. Under President Trump, the message was unequivocal: no one, regardless of fame or fortune, is above the law. McLaughlin has made it crystal clear: “Our message to any cartel affiliates in the U.S. is clear: We will find you and you will face consequences.” This decisive stance marks the end of unchecked cartel violence in our communities.

As of now, Chávez is undergoing expedited removal processes by ICE, which confirmed his illegal status after uncovering multiple fraudulent claims in his residency application. The reality remains stark: Chávez’s B2 tourist visa expired in February 2024, yet he managed to file for permanent residency based on ties to an American citizen linked with organized crime.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum is unequivocal, expressing her hope that Chávez will serve his inevitable sentence back home—a fitting course of action given his disturbing criminal record in the U.S. This includes DUI charges and multiple serious offenses connected to weapons trafficking. Such blatant criminal behavior ought to serve as a rallying cry for stricter immigration enforcement and accountability.

The time for leniency in our immigration policies has passed. We must demand a system that protects our public safety and prioritizes the rule of law. The days of letting dangerous criminals thrive unchecked in our country are over.
