The government shutdown has dragged on for four long weeks, causing serious harm to American families. It’s time for Congress to act decisively and pass a “clean” short-term funding bill to end this avoidable crisis now.

The American Federation of Government Employees represents over 800,000 dedicated federal and Washington workers, and they are sounding the alarm. This is not a partisan issue; it’s a matter of the livelihoods of hard-working Americans. AFGE President Everett Kelly made it clear: “Both political parties have made their point, and still there is no clear end in sight. It’s time to pass a clean continuing resolution and end this shutdown today. No half measures, and no gamesmanship.”

Republicans have been consistent in their call for a clean continuing resolution to keep the government functioning. Speaker Mike Johnson has actively urged Senate Democrats to support this measure, yet their response has been silence. The House has already passed a clean CR, maintaining current funding levels, but Senate Democrats have repeatedly blocked these reasonable proposals.

The impact of this shutdown is visible. Federal workers forced to rely on food banks after missing paychecks deserve better than political posturing. Kelly’s words resonate deeply: “The fact that they’re being cheated out of it is a national disgrace.” And while workers are guaranteed back pay, the Senate recently turned down a GOP-led initiative to ensure active-duty military members and certain federal employees receive pay during the shutdown. Instead, Democrats proposed a plan that focused more on restricting the Trump administration than on immediate solutions for American workers.

It’s time for our leaders to put politics aside and prioritize the people’s needs. They must focus on solutions rather than assigning blame for a shutdown that the vast majority of Americans disapprove of. Action is imperative—end this shutdown now.
