The Socialist Wing Takes Over: AOC and Buttigieg Now Lead Catastrophic Democrat 2028 Field
The Democratic Party’s worst nightmare has arrived: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the socialist congresswoman who can barely manage her own district, now leads the 2028 presidential primary field in New Hampshire with 22 percent support.
Right behind her sits Pete Buttigieg at 21 percent—the same failed Transportation Secretary who presided over one transportation disaster after another, from supply chain chaos to train derailments to the East Palestine debacle. This is what passes for leadership in today’s Democratic Party.
The poll of 648 New Hampshire primary voters released July 22 reveals the utter bankruptcy of the Democratic bench. Everyone else trails in single digits, a collection of has-beens and never-weres desperately clawing for relevance.
The Also-Rans Can’t Gain Traction
Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona manages just nine percent. Gavin Newsom, California’s failed governor who transformed the Golden State into a crime-ridden, homeless-infested nightmare, sits at eight percent. Even the perennial socialist Bernie Sanders can only muster six percent. Kamala Harris, the failed vice president and failed 2024 nominee, limps along at five percent.
The situation gets even more pathetic further down the list. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro registers at two percent. Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker—whose state hemorrhages residents faster than almost anywhere in America—scrapes the bottom at one percent.
AOC Surges While Establishment Flails
The trajectory tells the real story. Since October 2025, AOC has surged from 14 percent to 22 percent—a 57 percent increase that demonstrates the Democratic Party’s accelerating lurch toward outright socialism.
Meanwhile, the supposed establishment favorites are cratering. Kamala Harris has collapsed from 11 percent to five percent, losing more than half her support. Newsom has similarly plummeted from 15 percent to eight percent.
Newsom’s decline is particularly delicious. He’s been actively campaigning for president for three years, traveling the country, raising money, building a profile. And what does he have to show for it? Shrinking poll numbers and growing national awareness of his spectacular failures in California. Voters are getting to know him, and they don’t like what they see.
The Identity Politics Trap
The New Hampshire results may ultimately prove irrelevant. Democrats demoted the predominantly white state in 2024 after complaints about its “excessive influence” in the nomination process. Translation: New Hampshire voters weren’t delivering the identity-politics outcomes the party demanded.
South Carolina will likely claim the first primary slot again because it has a large black population. This isn’t about democracy or giving voters a voice—it’s about the Democratic Party’s cynical manipulation of the process to engineer predetermined outcomes.
Kamala’s National Advantage
Nationally, Kamala Harris maintains a commanding lead, sitting at 27.9 percent compared to Newsom’s 16.6 percent—an 11.3-point advantage that reflects her institutional advantages rather than any actual competence or appeal.
The Democratic Party has trapped itself in a corner of its own making. After pushing Biden aside in 2024, Democrats will find it nearly impossible to deny Kamala another chance without triggering a civil war within their coalition. The argument that she deserves a “fair shot”—one she supposedly didn’t get when Biden was forced out—will prove difficult to counter.
The Identity Politics Stranglehold
Democrats have become entirely captured by identity politics obsession, and Kamala checks every box on their checklist. She’s black. She’s a woman. And while party insiders won’t say it publicly, she’s proven to be a reliably compliant figure who reads the teleprompter and follows orders.
This identity politics stranglehold explains why the Democratic Party cannot afford to alienate black voters in 2028, particularly black women who form the most loyal segment of their coalition. Any move to sideline Kamala would risk fracturing the party’s foundation.
A Party Without Solutions
What this poll really reveals is a party completely devoid of serious leadership. The frontrunners are either radical socialists pushing policies that would devastate the American economy or failed administrators whose incompetence is well-documented and undeniable.
The Democratic Party that once claimed to represent working Americans now offers them a choice between AOC’s Green New Deal fantasies and Buttigieg’s transportation disasters. Between Newsom’s California chaos and Harris’s word-salad incoherence.
This is what happens when a political party abandons substance for identity, competence for ideology, and the interests of American citizens for the demands of radical activists.
The 2028 primary fight will be a spectacle worth watching—a circular firing squad of failed policies, broken promises, and desperate pandering. And Republicans will be ready with a record of achievement to contrast against the Democratic disaster on full display.
