Four hundred protesters packed a Pittsburg City Council meeting this week, determined to block a facility that represents exactly the kind of infrastructure America desperately needs to maintain its competitive edge in artificial intelligence.
Their complaints? The usual litany of NIMBY grievances: noise, diesel fumes, heat islands, and phantom health concerns. Cisneros claimed data centers create “heat islands, warming up the land around them by up to 16 degrees Fahrenheit”—a misleading statistic that ignores the controlled, contained nature of modern data center operations.
The teenager cited unverified reports of tinnitus and unnamed “health problems” supposedly linked to data centers. This is fear-mongering, plain and simple.

While AOC cheers on amateur activists blocking American infrastructure, China is building data centers at breakneck speed. Beijing understands what progressive Democrats apparently don’t: whoever controls AI infrastructure controls the future.
The New York representative gushed on Instagram that Cisneros demonstrated how “we ALL can speak up, make a difference.” Her comment received 20,000 likes from an echo chamber that would rather virtue-signal about local environmental concerns than confront the harsh realities of global competition.
“This is real influence! And it DOES have an impact,” Ocasio-Cortez added—inadvertently admitting that her brand of activism does indeed have impact, just not the kind America needs.
Economic Opportunity Meets Political Obstruction
The Pittsburg City Council already voted 5-0 in favor of this project back in 2024. They understood something the protesters don’t: this represents jobs, tax revenue, and economic revitalization for their community.
The facility would start with a 99-megawatt capacity and be built on a defunct municipal golf course that’s been closed since 2018. This isn’t pristine wilderness—it’s an abandoned recreational facility that stopped serving the community years ago.
Mayor Juan Antonio Banales correctly called it a “major investment in our local economy.” He’s right. But that rational assessment gets drowned out by manufactured outrage and apocalyptic predictions.
The Progressive War on Progress
Ocasio-Cortez has advocated for a national moratorium on data center construction—a position that would cripple American competitiveness in AI development. New York Governor Kathy Hochul already imposed a temporary ban, a move industry experts have rightly called panic-driven policymaking.
These facilities don’t just power social media and streaming services. They’re the backbone of AI research, national security systems, financial infrastructure, and medical innovations that save lives.
When local resident Carmen Magallan told reporters she’s “really considering moving” because of the data center, she revealed the entitled mindset driving this opposition. The facility would occupy a closed golf course—but apparently that’s too close to her house.
“How can you just plop it right down there?” she complained about a site specifically chosen because it’s already developed, formerly industrial land near existing infrastructure.
The Zoom Meeting Cop-Out
Facing intense pressure, Pittsburg officials scheduled a “community engagement workshop” for July 30. Their decision? Hold it over Zoom instead of in person.
That’s the government equivalent of running away from the mob. When elected officials cave to activist pressure by avoiding face-to-face accountability, democracy loses.
What’s Really at Stake
