Canada thought it could play hardball in the global trade arena by imposing taxes on American Big Tech companies. But just a few strong statements from President Donald Trump sent them running back to the negotiating table. This proves once again that when it comes to international trade, America holds all the cards.
President Trump made it abundantly clear: “Canada’s been a very difficult country to deal with over the years, and we have all the cards.” Through his strong leadership, he emphasized that Canada stands to lose more than America ever could in any economic face-off. The duplicity of trying to copy Europe’s taxing strategies was not only misguided but destined for failure.
While Canada may conduct some business with the U.S., they depend heavily on American markets for their exports. Trump highlighted the absurdity of Canada’s tariffs on American farmers, which can reach a staggering 400% on certain dairy products. It’s an outright assault on American agriculture that we cannot allow to continue.
Canada’s status as the second-largest trading partner with the United States reinforces this reality. Yet they still dared to implement a 3% tax on major American companies like Amazon and Google, reaching back to January of 2022. This retroactive approach not only threatened American enterprises but was a stark miscalculation of their own economic dependence.
Now, following Trump’s decisive stance, Canada has backtracked on its digital tax plan, granting themselves additional time to negotiate a favorable deal before the July 21 deadline. It’s a classic case of negotiating power. As BlazeTV host Sara Gonzales aptly put it, “It’s the art of the deal, man.”
America will not be bullied. We must protect our farmers, our businesses, and our interests. With strong leadership, we will continue to stand firm against unfair trade practices and defend the economic prosperity of our great nation.
