California Governor Gavin Newsom has just announced an astounding allocation of $140 million in taxpayer money for Planned Parenthood. This decision comes as the state grapples with significant budget deficits, making it even more outrageous. While working families struggle, Newsom prioritizes funding for abortion services over essential health needs.
Under the Hyde Amendment, federal funds cannot be used for abortions. However, Planned Parenthood has historically utilized these funds for various initiatives, leading to a perception of fungibility. In response to the Trump administration’s decisive action to cut federal funding to Planned Parenthood through the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, the organization has failed to regain its financial support through court challenges. This leaves California, under Newsom’s pro-abortion leadership, to pick up the slack with taxpayer dollars.
In a recent press statement, Governor Newsom boldly claimed, “California is a reproductive freedom state.” He insists that this so-called “investment” is critical to “protecting access to essential health care.” This is nothing more than a thinly veiled attempt to normalize the funding of abortion clinics, disregarding the ongoing financial crisis in the state.
