CNN’s Disgraceful Whitewashing of ISIS Terror Attack Exposes Media’s Broken Moral Compass
Two ISIS-pledging terrorists threw homemade bombs in New York City with the explicit goal of surpassing the carnage of the Boston Marathon bombing—and CNN’s first instinct was to portray them as ordinary teens whose lives were “drastically changed” by their arrest.
Let that sink in. Not by their decision to build explosives. Not by their allegiance to a genocidal terrorist organization. But by getting caught.
The network’s now-deleted social media post read like a parody of leftist media bias: “Two Pennsylvania teenagers crossed into New York City Saturday morning for what could’ve been a normal day enjoying the city during abnormally warm weather. But in less than an hour, their lives would drastically change as the pair would be arrested for throwing homemade bombs.”
This Wasn’t Poor Judgment—It Was Intentional Narrative Control
CNN wants Americans to believe this was simply a “breach of editorial standards”—a whoopsie-daisy moment from an overworked social media manager. Don’t buy it for a second.
The language wasn’t accidental. It was deliberate. The framing wasn’t sloppy. It was calculated. This is what happens when a news organization becomes so ideologically captured that it reflexively sympathizes with terrorists over their intended victims.
Senator Eric Schmitt (R-MO) cut through the nonsense with surgical precision: “CNN got this headline wrong. It should be: ‘Two radical Islamic terrorists came to NYC pledging allegiance to ISIS with bombs meant to kill Americans.'”
He’s absolutely right. That’s the story. That’s the only story. Everything else is propaganda.
The Pattern of Infantilizing Evil
Michael Knowles nailed the absurdity: “Classic Pennsylvania teenager behavior: throwing IEDs and pledging allegiance to ISIS. Boys will be boys!”
This isn’t CNN’s first rodeo with this kind of obscene terrorist apologism. Time and again, major media outlets contort themselves into pretzels to avoid stating obvious truths about radical Islamic terrorism. They deploy passive voice, euphemisms, and sob stories to obscure the reality that some people—motivated by a violent ideology—want to murder Americans.
These weren’t kids who made a mistake. They weren’t troubled youth who took a wrong turn. They were aspiring mass murderers who pledged allegiance to ISIS and attempted to execute a terrorist attack on American soil.
CNN’s “Correction” Admits Everything While Apologizing for Nothing
After the justified backlash reached critical mass, CNN memory-holed the post and issued a mealy-mouthed statement claiming it “failed to reflect the gravity of the incident.” They scrubbed their article, slapped on an editor’s note, and hoped the controversy would blow over.
Then Brian Stelter—CNN’s perpetual hall monitor of media criticism—had the audacity to claim “the story itself was solid” while admitting the social media post was problematic. One problem: the tweet was lifted directly from the article’s original opening paragraphs before CNN stealth-edited them.
Jerry Dunleavy exposed this dishonesty immediately: “The tweet in question was also the lede of the story before the article was stealth edited.” So much for solid reporting.
What CNN’s Framing Reveals About Progressive Media
This debacle reveals something darker than mere incompetence. It exposes the moral bankruptcy at the heart of progressive journalism.
CNN’s instinct wasn’t to condemn terrorism. It was to humanize terrorists. Their first impulse wasn’t to focus on the intended victims or the brave law enforcement who stopped the attack. It was to lament how arrest “drastically changed” the lives of two ISIS sympathizers carrying improvised explosive devices.
This is the same network that spent years running interference for Antifa rioters, calling destructive protests “mostly peaceful” while buildings burned in the background. The same outlet that contorts itself to avoid naming radical Islamic terrorism. The same organization that treats progressive causes with kid gloves while subjecting conservatives to prosecutorial scrutiny.
Americans Deserve Better Than Terrorist Sympathizers Masquerading as Journalists
The American people aren’t stupid. They see through this manipulation. They recognize when media outlets prioritize narrative over truth, ideology over facts, and political correctness over national security.
When teenagers build bombs, travel to a major city, and attempt to kill civilians in the name of ISIS, there’s only one appropriate response from the media: unequivocal condemnation. Not sympathy. Not contextualization. Not framing them as victims of their own poor choices.
CNN failed that basic test of moral clarity. And their belated, grudging acknowledgment of “editorial standards” violations doesn’t erase the instinct that produced such morally grotesque coverage in the first place.
This wasn’t a mistake. This was a window into how CNN actually views terrorism, terrorists, and the American people they target. The network showed us exactly who they are—and we should believe them.
The only thing that “drastically changed” these terrorists’ lives was their decision to embrace evil and attempt mass murder. Everything that followed was justice, pure and simple. CNN’s inability to grasp that fundamental truth disqualifies them from serious consideration as a news organization.
Americans deserve media outlets that stand unequivocally against terrorism and terrorists. CNN has proven, once again, that it isn’t one of them.
