Is It an Interstellar Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing?
This week, the threat of an unprecedented celestial event looms large as the NASA-supported International Asteroid Warning Network (IAWN) launches an emergency defense probe in response to the unusual behavior of 3I/ATLAS. Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb warns that this Manhattan-sized interstellar object could very well be an extraterrestrial “Trojan horse” with profound implications for humanity.
Loeb has maintained since the object’s July discovery that it could have alien origins. Based on data from the Webb Telescope, he estimated 3I/ATLAS might weigh a staggering 33 billion tons. “It’s at least a thousand times more massive than the previous interstellar objects we’ve encountered,” Loeb asserts. “The question we must all ask is: why is such a colossal entity entering our inner solar system when we’ve only seen small ones before?”
This situation requires immediate global vigilance. Loeb stresses that we must formulate a defense plan against what he describes as a potential “black swan event”—a high-impact occurrence that’s hard to foresee but seems inevitable in hindsight. He cautions, “The object may initially appear natural, but could end up being deceptively dangerous, much like a Trojan Horse.”
To illustrate the gravity of this situation, Loeb likens the presence of 3I/ATLAS to a “blind date,” where the initial impression may conceal a sinister reality. “You might assume your partner is friendly, but lurking beneath the surface could be lethal intentions,” he emphasizes.
While NASA insists that 3I/ATLAS poses no threat, the IAWN is taking no chances. A comprehensive “comet campaign” will run from late November to late January, aimed at pinpointing the object’s exact trajectory. These actions come on the heels of the object showing numerous unusual behaviors that deviate from standard comet characteristics, potentially indicating an extraterrestrial origin.
Among its alarming features is an anti-tail—a jet of particles fascinatingly pointing towards the sun, contradicting all known comet behavior. More strikingly, ATLAS has been observed releasing a plume of four grams of nickel per second, devoid of any iron. This specific alloy, nickel tetracarbonyl, has only been observed in human manufacturing, raising more questions about its nature.
Loeb further highlights the object’s unusual trajectory and non-gravitational acceleration, which brings it uncomfortably close to Jupiter, Venus, and Mars. In one particularly bold paper, he suggested that these factors could indicate ATLAS is an alien probe, potentially conducting reconnaissance on Earth with unknown intentions. “This raises two possibilities: either its intentions are benign, or they are malign,” he stated.
As 3I/ATLAS approaches its closest proximity to the Sun, its true nature may soon unfold. Loeb posits that if this object is indeed a colossal spacecraft, it might use our Sun’s gravity to alter its course and speed, ultimately exiting the solar system. “If 3I/ATLAS is indeed a massive mothership, it will likely continue on its original gravitational path,” he concludes, underscoring the urgency for our planet to grasp the significance of this cosmic encounter.
