The congresswoman—who subsequently lost her own primary bid for Cornyn’s seat to James Talarico this Tuesday—essentially provided a blueprint of Cornyn’s political strategy: deceive conservative voters during primary season, then revert to business-as-usual Washington dealmaking.

Her assessment carries particular weight given the timing. These remarks have resurfaced as Cornyn battles Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in a May 26 Republican primary runoff that will determine who represents the GOP in what should be a safely Republican seat.

Neither candidate secured a majority in the March 3 primary. Cornyn limped across the finish line with roughly 42 percent—barely edging Paxton’s 41 percent despite a staggering financial advantage that made this contest the most expensive Senate primary in American history.

The spending disparity reveals the establishment’s desperation. Cornyn and his allies poured an estimated $69 million to $71 million into propping up the incumbent senator and savaging his opponents. Paxton’s campaign, by contrast, operated on approximately $4 million.

That seventeen-to-one spending advantage bought Cornyn a razor-thin one-point lead. Nothing more.

Rep. Wesley Hunt (R-TX) finished third with about 14 percent, representing nearly 290,000 voters whose support both candidates will now aggressively court. That total exceeds by eleven times the roughly 25,000-vote margin separating the two runoff candidates.

The senator previously stated that Republicans “need someone as an alternative” to President Donald Trump. This is the record of someone Democrats openly praise as reasonable and cooperative—precisely because he advances their priorities.

The mask slipped further when Alex Latcham, executive director of the Senate Leadership Fund aligned with Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD), launched a bizarre post-primary attack on Hunt.

“Congratulations to Wesley Hunt on an abysmal third place finish in Texas’ Republican primary,” Latcham sneered, dismissing the congressman’s campaign as a “career-ending vanity tour” run by “amateur consultants.”

The statement backfired spectacularly. Latcham had just insulted nearly 290,000 Texas Republican voters whose support will likely determine the runoff outcome—voters who now understand exactly what the establishment thinks of them.

This unforced error exposed the arrogance permeating Washington’s donor class and their operatives, who apparently believe they can purchase Texas with unlimited money while openly disdaining the state’s conservative base.

Trump Holds the Trump Card

President Donald Trump has deliberately withheld his endorsement, instead establishing a clear condition: he wants the SAVE America Act on his desk before weighing in.

The legislation would require proof of citizenship to register to vote—a common-sense reform that should be uncontroversial in any functioning republic.

Paxton has seized this opportunity with both hands. He announced he would “consider dropping out of this race if Senate Leadership agrees to lift the filibuster and passes the SAVE America Act,” while blasting Cornyn as “a coward who has refused to support abolishing the filibuster to pass this bill.”
