Not long ago, Andrew Cuomo was universally recognized as a disgraced figure, a political liability unworthy of public service. As the governor of New York, he recklessly endangered thousands, ordering nursing homes to accept COVID-positive patients, which led to devastating senior deaths. He pushed disastrous bail “reform” laws that sent violent criminals back into our communities. After years of hypocrisy regarding sexism, he ultimately resigned in disgrace amidst groping allegations.

Yet, astonishingly, Cuomo is back on the political stage, aiming to become mayor of New York City. Even more shocking is the endorsement he’s receiving from the so-called conservative establishment. Influential figures like Rupert Murdoch’s media empire, Republican mogul John Catsimatidis, and numerous Fox News personalities are urging voters to support him come November 4. Their rationale? They claim Cuomo’s opponent, Zohran Mamdani, is even worse.

### The Establishment’s Favorite ‘Lesser Evil’

Mamdani is indeed a radical—a self-described socialist and Hamas sympathizer. However, the panic surrounding his candidacy has morphed into a convenient excuse to resurrect Cuomo’s political career. Pundits warn that a Mamdani victory would threaten the safety of Jewish communities in New York City. On Fox News, Democrat donor Bill Acker and Manhattan rabbi Elliot Cosgrove, who continues to perpetuate unfounded accusations against Donald Trump, implored viewers to back Cuomo. Moments later, Catsimatidis commanded Republicans to heed Trump’s “endorsement” and support the disgraced former governor.

This debacle is not merely ridiculous; it’s an insult to the intelligence of the electorate. Lifelong Democrats and media barons are portraying Cuomo as the only viable option to stop the chaos, while dismissing a credible alternative as an “oddball.”

### The New York Post’s Moral Collapse

A particularly egregious display of this twisted logic came from a New York Post editorial, which offered Cuomo a half-hearted endorsement while denigrating Curtis Sliwa, the founder of the Guardian Angels and a dedicated crime fighter in New York subways. The Post labeled Sliwa as an “oddball” with an irrelevant past, mocking his commitment to animal welfare as a sign of eccentricity.

Such contemptible behavior from the Post is astonishing. What “shady past” do they reference? Their editorial utterly fails to mention details that could even begin to rival Cuomo’s history of political misconduct. This is a newspaper that once deemed Cuomo too corrupt for office now welcoming him back with open arms, as if his only challengers are socialism or sleaze.

### Rejecting the Real Alternative

The truth is, New York had a viable choice all along. Sliwa, a Reagan Republican with populist appeal, was poised to unite voters across party lines with a focus on safety and restoring order. Instead, the elite in New York opted for the corrupt insider they knew. Cuomo attended their social events; Sliwa did not quite fit their mold. Now, with Mamdani leading in the polls, the same establishment that once condemned Cuomo is in a frenzy, insisting he is the only line of defense against chaos.

The New York Post, among others, has gone to great lengths to rebrand Cuomo as a pillar of stability, conveniently ignoring its own past characterizations of him as a dangerous and corrupt leader.

### What the Election Reveals

Mamdani’s positions on Israel are reckless, and his support for Hamas is nothing short of morally bankrupt. However, his real threat lies in domestic policies that would dismantle what little remains of New York’s police protection—continuing Cuomo’s agenda to eliminate cash bail that has empowered criminals.

A Mamdani win represents potential anarchy for New York. But a Cuomo victory would signify a far worse outcome: a validation of a corrupt elite that believes in protecting their own over accountability, so long as it keeps their favored players in power.

This embrace of Andrew Cuomo by the conservative establishment illustrates its descent into a protection racket for inept elites. In the name of “stopping the left,” it rewards the very individuals who have brought New York to its knees.

New Yorkers should not be forced to choose between a Marxist and a predator. There was an opportunity for them to choose a candidate who genuinely represents the people—someone who understands the struggles of everyday New Yorkers. Instead, they opted to fall in line with the establishment’s demands, paving the way for chaos, decay, and the return of a man they once vowed to denounce.
