The federal government hurtles toward a shutdown at midnight Friday as House Democrats weaponize the Minneapolis shooting of Alex Pretti to strip funding for the Department of Homeland Security. Their refusal to back a must-pass spending bill hinges on overturning immigration enforcement—an impossible demand that imperils every federal agency.
Democrats insist on yanking Homeland Security dollars in response to Pretti’s fatal confrontation with ICE agents. They charge “excessive force,” yet demand to defund the very officers who shield our borders and uphold the rule of law.
Video shows Pretti lunging at ICE officers, grabbing a loaded Sig Sauer pistol, and triggering a split-second, life-or-death encounter. Preliminary footage is under federal review. Yet Democrats leap to judgment without facts—weaponizing tragedy for political gain.
Republicans stand united. Senate Majority Leader John Thune vows no carve-outs. “We need a full DHS appropriation,” he declared. “No single agency gets held hostage for partisan theater.”
Oversight champions Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) and Rep. Andrew Garbarino (R-N.Y.) have demanded public testimony from DHS officials. They will grill agency heads until every question is answered and every policy scrutinized.
Prudence tempers some GOP voices. Sen. John Curtis (R-Utah) warns against premature conclusions and urges patience for the internal probe. But caution does not equate to capitulation—every fact will emerge under the bright light of scrutiny.
At the White House, President Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, has been dispatched to Minneapolis to mend fences with Mayor Jacob Frey and Gov. Tim Walz. Meanwhile, White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller labeled Pretti a “would-be assassin” who “tried to murder federal law enforcement.”
Hypocrisy abounds among Democrats. Just last year, they green-lit a full DHS appropriations package. Now they threaten a shutdown amidst a 53-vote Republican Senate majority—pure political grandstanding at America’s expense.
Even so, some House Democrats express buyer’s remorse. Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-N.Y.) admitted he “failed to view” the vote as a referendum on ICE conduct. That confession underscores the chaos within their own ranks.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, however, has drawn a firm line: No DHS funding unless leadership meets every demand. He gambles on a shutdown, betting Republicans will cave—an arrogant miscalculation in a Congress ready to defend law enforcement.
Sanctuary policies have crippled cooperation. DHS officials attribute violent crime in Minneapolis to local obstruction of federal agents. Nearly 500 criminal illegal aliens were released back onto the streets—only to commit new offenses.
Republican leaders issue a simple ultimatum: Pass the six-bill package intact or own the shutdown. There will be no renegotiation under threat of defunding the Department that protects our nation.
