Jay Jones, the Democratic nominee for Virginia Attorney General, has crossed a line that should disqualify him from public office. In shocking text messages revealed from August 2022, Jones expressed a desire to kill former Republican lawmaker Todd Gilbert, stating he would give him “two bullets to the head” and even suggested he would attend Gilbert’s funeral to “urinate on his grave.” Such incendiary rhetoric is appalling and undermines the very foundation of civil discourse.

These messages, sent to Republican Delegate Carrie Coyner, show Jones harboring violent thoughts toward his political opponents. His alarming comments reveal a dangerous mindset that has no place in our political landscape. When questioned about his statements, Jones dismissed Coyner’s concerns, showing a complete lack of accountability or remorse.

What’s more, Jones seems to be deflecting blame for his violent fantasies onto “Trump-controlled media,” rather than acknowledging the severity of his words. This kind of finger-pointing does nothing to absolve him of his despicable remarks. He claimed, “violent rhetoric has no place in our politics,” while simultaneously advocating for harm against those he disagrees with. His attempt to shift the narrative is transparent and indicative of a candidate attempting to distance himself from his own dangerous statements.

Further complicating his already questionable judgment, Jones has faced scrutiny for his past conduct, including a reckless driving incident for which he attempted to fulfill community service hours through his own political action committee—a move that raises serious ethical concerns. His inability to own up to his actions is troubling at best and disqualifying at worst.

Virginia deserves a leader who upholds integrity and accountability, not someone who fantasizes about violence and seeks to manipulate the political narrative. The Republican Attorneys General Association has rightly called for Jones to step down, asserting that the violent rhetoric he espoused is part of a broader problem that threatens the civility of our politics. It’s time for voters to demand accountability and reject candidates like Jones who embody this toxic mentality.
