Democrats are holding the paychecks of millions of military service members hostage. This shocking reality reveals their willingness to sacrifice our brave men and women in uniform to push their radical agenda.
In an alarming turn of events, Congressman Ronny Jackson has openly condemned the Democrats’ obstruction of a critical short-term spending plan. As this government shutdown drags on, approximately two million military personnel are working without pay, while members of Congress continue to collect their salaries. This is nothing short of disgraceful.
Jackson states, “Democrats are shutting down the government and holding our troops’ paychecks hostage, punishing the very men and women who put their lives on the line to protect America.” It’s both infuriating and predictable that Democrats prioritize their extreme policies over the well-being of our servicemembers.
The fallout is dire, particularly for families in Jackson’s district. Children whose parents serve at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita County, Texas, have already lost access to crucial after-school programs. For many of these families, such support is essential while parents are on duty.
According to the Department of Defense’s shutdown contingency plan, military personnel, including reservists on federal active duty, are still required to report for duty. However, this situation comes with the heavy burden of uncertainty—many will be performing their duties without assurance of payment.
Meanwhile, nearly 400,000 civilian employees within the Department of Defense who conduct critical national security activities are also expected to work without compensation. Hundreds of thousands more face furloughs, a reckless outcome for our national security.
The inability of the military to enter into new contracts or renew existing agreements exacerbates this crisis, delaying vital capabilities for our warfighters. This is an unacceptable consequence of political gamesmanship.
Last month, the Republican-led House passed a funding bill to maintain government operations at current-year levels. However, this responsible measure stalled in the Senate thanks to Democrats’ outrageous demands for an additional $1.5 trillion in spending.
The Trump administration is calling on Republicans to use this shutdown as an opportunity to eliminate wasteful government spending and tackle fraud head-on. Office of Management and Budget Director Russ Vought is spearheading a review of the bloated federal bureaucracy to identify cuts that can and must be made.
It’s time to prioritize our troops. Let’s make the tough decisions necessary to protect those who protect us.
