This wasn’t a minor gaffe; it was a glaring symbol of a party unable to keep its act together during a crucial moment.
Around 4:53 a.m., while Republicans strategized to pass the bill, Jeffries seized his moment to stall. But as he droned on, Kaptur’s eyelids grew heavy, necessitating she was replaced by Rep. Sarah McBride (D-Del.), who abruptly nudged her awake. The optics were terrible, showing an opposition party anything but alert or engaged.
This chaotic scene unfolded as GOP leadership kept the House in session through the night, pushing for unity among their narrow majority. Democrats, sensing the urgency, attempted to present a strong front, but it fell flat when their members appeared more focused on sleep than substance.
Despite the distractions, Republicans climbed over procedural hurdles and managed to shift the tide after four holdouts came to their senses. Jeffries tried to leverage his “magic minute” to read aloud letters from concerned constituents, but his efforts were in vain. His strategy was one of delay, not progress, revealing an unsettling truth about the Democratic agenda — disconnected and out of touch.
