On January 20, ICE conducted a standard, targeted operation to arrest Adrian Alexander Conejo Arias, a convicted criminal from Ecuador. The Biden administration had inexplicably released him into the country. When officers approached his vehicle, Arias fled on foot, leaving his son behind.

One ICE officer remained with the boy; the others apprehended Arias without further incident. Under established protocol—identical to past administrations—parents may depart voluntarily with their children or designate a responsible adult. Children never remain in government custody unnecessarily.

Democratic National Committee Chairman Ken Martin and Representatives Ilhan Omar and Jimmy Gomez hurled baseless accusations, claiming ICE sought to “use [the child] as bait.” Their outrage is a cynical ploy: a human-trafficking narrative devoid of evidence. These elected officials cheerfully ignore the fact that the father’s abandonment created the circumstance ICE simply managed.

ICE offers illegal entrants a lawful return through the CBP One Home app, which provides a free flight home and $2,600 in assistance—options the majority decline. When they do choose to stay, ICE enforces the law, ensuring criminals face justice and that children are protected from their own parents’ flight.
