Christine Riordan, the former president of Adelphi University, has found herself embroiled in a shocking scandal. Last week, she was arrested for drunken driving after recklessly smashing her BMW into two parked cars and careening through a fence onto Long Island Rail Road tracks.
At 60 years old, Riordan stepped down from her leadership role at the university just a few months ago. Now, she faces serious charges following a chaotic incident at the Nassau Boulevard Railroad Station. Eyewitnesses saw her vehicle crash into multiple obstacles, including a train platform and critical infrastructure, rendering the area unsafe and halting train service temporarily.
“A vehicle with two occupants crashed into two parked vehicles, a fence, the railroad tracks, and more,” stated the Garden City Police Department in a press release. The response to this reckless behavior was swift, highlighting the severity of the incident that put public safety at risk.
Despite her claims of innocence, Riordan’s actions have consequences. The police charged her with misdemeanor driving while intoxicated. Thankfully, no injuries were reported, but that doesn’t absolve her from the gravity of the incident.
Her attorney, Steven Gaitman, issues a blanket denial of the allegations, asserting that they intend to present evidence supporting her claim of not being under the influence at the time. He pointed to a supposed vehicle malfunction as the cause of this catastrophic event, but this assertion does little to quell the storm of public scrutiny surrounding her actions.
In light of this incident, it’s important to note that Riordan’s license has been suspended. Furthermore, while her exact salary as president isn’t currently available, reports indicate that she made over $1 million in total compensation in 2021. Such a figure raises questions about accountability and responsibility, especially for someone who once held a prominent position in education.
Leadership demands a standard of conduct that Riordan’s recent choices have clearly undermined. The community deserves transparency and consequences when public figures fail to uphold the trust placed in them.
