He’s not just in it to play; he’s aiming for his fifth consecutive championship belt in this thrilling hot dog eating contest opening event.
At 56 years old, this father of three from Selden, Long Island, is a force to be reckoned with. “I’m refining my technique—taking larger gulps and fewer of them,” Booker boldly states. Channeling the spirit of a martial artist, he says, “The harder you hit, the faster you punch. I’m confident, really confident.” Last year, he made headlines by setting a world record with a jaw-dropping 21-second chug.
For over 25 years, Booker has been an essential part of America’s favorite eating showdown. His journey began in 1997 when he qualified for the big stage at Nathan’s in Oceanside, downing 16 hot dogs in just 12 minutes. “I got the trophy, a spot at Coney Island, and a year’s supply of hot dogs,” he recalls. That launched him into the elite class of eaters.
Embracing Greatness
That pivotal moment turned Booker into a ravenous competitor. He’s not just in it for the hot dogs; he relishes every Major League Eating event—chicken wings are his personal favorite. His legendary nickname, “Badlands,” was bestowed upon him by a prominent media source in 2001, and he wears it with pride. “Once it caught on, I ran with it,” he asserts.
From competitor to star, Booker embraced the culinary arts with a twist, launching a food-themed hip-hop career in the mid-2000s. Albums like “Hungry and Focused” showcased his unique style, culminating in a recorded intro for the Nathan’s contest in 2020.
In 2012, he took his talents to YouTube with the channel Badlands Chugs, aiming to break down barriers—like chugging a two-liter Diet Coke without burping. “I remember it vividly. I failed spectacularly with a nine-second burp that went viral,” Booker recalls. “My son filmed it, and my wife thought chaos had erupted downstairs.”
Since that mini-explosion, he’s set numerous world records for chugging everything from ocean water to pickle juice, all while gaining nearly 4 million followers. The nearly six-pound lemonade title belt he helped design stands as a testament to his relentless dedication and creativity.
Booker made lemonade chugging a spectacle, and after that phenomenal debut, Nathan’s expanded the competition. Now it’s a full-fledged event that fans can’t wait to witness.

I’m ready to go, and I don’t have to use the bathroom for at least an hour,” he explains confidently.
As the reigning lemonade king, Booker takes immense pride in his status, recognizing that he has become a household name nearly 30 years after that initial win. “People recognize my voice on the subway. ‘Hey, you’re the guy from Nathan’s! You’re the chug guy!’ It’s fantastic, and I love engaging with them,” he says, inspired by the connection he’s forged with fans.
