A beloved Manhattan bodega cat, Freddy, was brutally mauled to death by two pit bulls last week, while the dogs’ owner and her companions looked on with disturbing indifference, reportedly celebrating the horrific scene. This shocking act of cruelty has rightfully ignited outrage across the community and demands immediate action.

At approximately 9 p.m. last Friday, the innocent tabby Freddy was attacked outside his home at Michelle Flowers in Washington Heights. Volunteers from Cat Collective NY reviewed video surveillance and spoke with witnesses who confirmed the horrifying details. They described how the pit bulls’ owner and her friends indulged in food and laughter as Freddy suffered, highlighting a societal breakdown where such callousness is tolerated.

“This was pure evil,” asserted Dan Rimada of Bodega Cats of New York. “Someone unleashed vicious dogs on a defenseless cat while people cheered. This cannot stand.” Tragically, the store owners were not present during the attack, but nearby residents quickly alerted a local feeder involved with Cat Collective, who then notified the store owners about the unimaginable fate of Freddy.

The aftermath was heartbreakingly real. The store owner was devastated upon hearing the news about Freddy, collapsing in tears. Volunteers faced the grim task of transporting Freddy’s remains to a veterinarian, incurring a cost of $400 for cremation. He was not just a cat; he was a cherished companion who brought joy to countless local patrons.

Cat Collective NY aptly stated, “Losing him feels like a terrible injustice.” It’s imperative that we hold those responsible for this heinous act accountable. The rescuers are actively seeking to uncover the identity of the pit bulls’ owner and are offering a $200 reward for information regarding the bystanders who showed no concern during the attack. It’s time for anyone with information to step up and report this to the police immediately.

Despite the fervor to seek justice for Freddy, the NYPD has disappointing news: “harm or death to an animal caused by another animal is not a criminal matter.” This outdated stance leaves pet owners with limited options, trapped within a system that fails to protect the most vulnerable members of our communities.

Legislation aimed at addressing these loopholes, known as Penny’s Law, remains stalled in committee. A similar bill is being drafted at the city level by Councilwoman Gale Brewer. The time for meaningful change is now. We must rally together to ensure that the justice Freddy deserves is not only sought but achieved. There can be no tolerance for cruelty, and we must support measures that protect innocent lives in our neighborhoods.
