A Wisconsin daycare worker is facing severe criminal charges after a shocking incident where she allegedly shattered a 3-month-old baby’s arm by slamming her into a crib. The outrageous behavior displayed by Ashley Karschnick, 32, at Lily Pad Day Care in Fond du Lac on October 13 is both disturbing and unacceptable.

Karschnick has been charged with physical abuse of a child—an accusation that exposes the depths of her irresponsibility and cruelty. Time and again, we hear about tragic events in institutions meant to protect our children, and this case is no exception. Authorities were alerted to the infant’s injuries at the Children’s Hospital in Milwaukee, leading to a swift investigation by the Fond du Lac Police Department.

Reviewing surveillance footage, detectives witnessed Karschnick’s escalating frustration throughout the day. In a shocking display, she was seen picking the infant up by the torso before forcefully slamming her down onto the crib. The impact was so severe that it sent shockwaves through the crib, accompanied by an audible thump. It’s infuriating to think someone responsible for caring for our most vulnerable could act with such violence.

Despite the baby’s continued screams, Karschnick callously returned to swaddle her only after eight agonizing minutes. Alarmingly, when she placed the child on the floor, the baby’s left arm was visibly limp, highlighting the gravity of her injuries.

A medical examination revealed a “minimal displaced spiral fracture” in the baby’s arm, a clear sign of abuse. Incredibly, Karschnick denied any intent to harm the child during her police interview, further showcasing her detachment from reality.

Fond du Lac Lieutenant Nick Hahn stated, “The safety and well-being of our community’s children will always be our highest priority.” He added that the department is committed to transparency and accountability in such harrowing cases. Words matter, but actions speak louder; we must demand that these assurances translate into meaningful protections.

Karschnick has posted a $2,500 bond and is barred from having contact with children under 12 years old, except her own. This case certainly raises questions about the oversight of those tasked with safeguarding our children. As Karschnick prepares to return to court, one thing remains clear: our children deserve better protection from those who should care for them. The community is right to demand accountability, and justice must be served.
