In just 48 hours, funding for the Department of Homeland Security will expire—and the security of our border and our nation hangs in the balance.
Republican senators are moving decisively to carve DHS out of a sprawling spending package. Splitting DHS funding gives negotiators the leverage to keep the government open while forcing Democrats to face the consequences of their own obstruction.
House Republicans have already done their part. Six appropriations bills, negotiated in good faith and passed with overwhelming GOP support, landed on the Senate floor last week. Now it’s up to Senate Democrats to choose between national security and political theater.
President Trump has made his position crystal clear: he wants the government open and our borders secured. His administration has been relentless behind closed doors, pressing both parties to avert a shutdown and protect frontline agents and law-abiding Americans.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune announced, “We’re on the brink of a deal that preserves DHS funding and keeps the lights on.” He’s right. A short-term continuing resolution specifically for DHS buys critical time without sacrificing our negotiating power.
Meanwhile, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer unveiled a wish list of half-measures designed to hobble immigration enforcement. Anonymous agents? Secret operatives? These proposals flirt with chaos and reward lawbreakers while gutting officer safety.
Senate Republicans will reject any add-ons that weaken our frontline defenses. No backdoor amnesties. No restrictions on bodycam footage that hamper officer accountability. We demand full transparency and full authority for our agents.
In the House, Appropriations Chairman Tom Cole put it bluntly: “Democrats got exactly what they asked for in these bills. If they now choose to shut down the government, they’ll own every consequence—from stalled FEMA disaster relief to grounded military flights.”
A partial shutdown is worse than no funding at all. It strips DHS of the flexibility to respond to crises—natural disasters, terrorist threats and surges in illegal border crossings. That’s not leadership; it’s abdication.
Senate Republicans stand united. We will not let Democrats hold America hostage over petty political demands. We’ll keep the government open, ensure every Border Patrol agent has the tools to do their job, and protect the American people from the lawlessness pouring across our frontier.
The clock is ticking. Democrats must decide: stand with national security or stand aside while the border collapses. The choice is theirs—and history will remember who refused to lead.
