The Left’s Mob Came For Team USA’s Hockey Heroes—And Got Exactly What They Deserved

Jack Hughes lost half a tooth securing Olympic gold for America, then lost the approval of progressive Twitter for the unforgivable sin of laughing during a presidential phone call.

The backlash came swift and severe. Within hours of Team USA’s thrilling overtime victory against Canada, left-wing media outlets and keyboard warriors transformed our national heroes into public enemies. Their crime? Accepting a congratulatory call from President Donald Trump and failing to immediately prostrate themselves in apology when he made an off-hand joke about inviting the women’s hockey team to avoid impeachment.

The Outrage Machine Kicks Into High Gear

USA Today solemnly declared the men’s hockey team “utterly failed to meet the cultural moment.” The New York Times wrung its hands over how the team “won gold — and then lost the room.” Most absurdly, Vox published a winners-and-losers list that praised Eileen Gu—an American who defected to represent Communist China—while branding our own gold medal winners as “losers.”

Let that sink in. The same people celebrating an athlete who chose the Chinese Communist Party over her own country are condemning young American men who bled for their nation on the ice.

The demands poured in from all corners of the progressive intelligentsia. The team must denounce Trump. They must refuse his State of the Union invitation. They must personally apologize for a joke they didn’t make. One Twitter fan page dramatically announced it would cease posting content about Hughes, declaring “f*ck ice and this administration.”

When Unity Becomes Heresy

Here’s what the outrage mob conveniently ignores: These players have consistently championed their female counterparts. Hughes himself said the first person he thought of after scoring the game-winning goal was Megan Keller, who had just secured gold for the women’s team. During the Trump call, one player can be heard chanting “two for two!” celebrating both teams’ victories.

None of this matters to the Left. Facts are irrelevant when there’s a narrative to advance and wrongthink to punish.

Hughes handled the manufactured controversy with admirable grace. “People are so negative out there, and they are just trying to find a reason to put people down and make something out of almost nothing,” he said. His mother, a former hockey player, echoed this sentiment: “These players, both the men and women, can bring so much unity to a group and to a country.”

She’s right. But unity isn’t what the Left wants.

The Rules That Apply Only To Conservatives

Notice how these controversies only flow in one direction. When President Biden hosted Olympians in 2024 and 2022, there were no demands for athletes to denounce him. No think pieces about “meeting the cultural moment.” No social media mobs calling for apologies.

Conservatives don’t operate this way. We don’t compare our political opponents to genocidal dictators and then demand that athletes and celebrities shun them as untouchables. We understand that engaging with the President of the United States—regardless of party—is an honor, not a political statement requiring subsequent atonement.

The New York Times columnist inadvertently revealed the game when he wrote: “This isn’t a neutral climate. This isn’t a neutral president.”

Translation: Your side is evil, our side is good, and anyone who fails to treat Republicans as pariahs must be destroyed.

No President Is Neutral—But Only One Side Demands Loyalty Oaths

Every president represents a party with specific political ambitions. Every president seeks to associate himself with national triumphs. This is not new. What’s new is the Left’s insistence that its political positions are so self-evidently correct that they transcend politics entirely and become moral imperatives.

Under this twisted framework, Biden hosting athletes was simply the President doing his job. Trump doing the exact same thing becomes a fascist power grab requiring public denunciation from anyone who participates.

This is the progressive playbook: Define your own positions as “neutral” and “normal,” then brand any deviation as extremism. Demand that public figures either enthusiastically embrace leftist orthodoxy or perform elaborate rituals of condemnation whenever they interact with conservatives. Accept nothing less than total compliance.

The Unwinnable Game

Team USA’s hockey players are learning a harsh lesson that every conservative public figure already knows: There is no winning with these people. The mob doesn’t want apologies or explanations. They want submission.

If the team had immediately embarked on a cable news apology tour and donated to every progressive women’s organization in existence, it wouldn’t have been enough. The goal isn’t reconciliation—it’s domination.

The only proper response to this coordinated attack is the one Hughes delivered: Ignore it. Refuse to play a game where the rules change mid-match and the referees are openly hostile.

These young men sacrificed their bodies and dedicated years of their lives to representing America on the world stage. They defeated Canada in overtime to claim Olympic gold. They deserve celebration, not condemnation.

The Left’s True Colors

This entire episode reveals something profound about the modern progressive movement: It cannot tolerate neutrality, cannot accept that Americans might have priorities beyond politics, and cannot stomach the idea that someone might receive honor from a Republican president.

The same people who lecture endlessly about unity and bringing people together demand absolute ideological segregation. They preach tolerance while practicing the most rigid conformity. They claim to celebrate women while weaponizing them as props in partisan attacks.

Team USA’s men’s hockey team won gold for America. They celebrated with their countrymen. They accepted congratulations from their President. And for this, they face denunciation from a media establishment that grows more detached from normal Americans with each passing day.

The good news? Ordinary Americans see through this charade. While progressive columnists clutch their pearls, the rest of us are celebrating a remarkable athletic achievement and recognizing these manufactured controversies for what they are: desperate attempts by a failing media to maintain relevance by stoking division.

Jack Hughes lost half a tooth winning gold for America. The only thing the outrage mob lost was whatever remaining credibility it had left.
