Jon Stewart Drops Bombshell: Liberal Media “Squandered” Public Trust With Relentless Russia Hoax Hysteria

Even Jon Stewart can’t deny it anymore—the mainstream media destroyed its own credibility by weaponizing the debunked Trump-Russia collusion conspiracy theory.

The liberal comedian made the stunning admission during a recent episode of his podcast The Weekly Show, confessing what conservatives have been saying for years: the establishment press burned through whatever trust Americans still had in them by breathlessly peddling the Russia hoax throughout President Trump’s first term.

The Hamster Wheel of Deception

Stewart pulled no punches when discussing how media outlets relentlessly hyped the Mueller investigation and other anti-Trump narratives. Speaking with MSNBC host Ali Velshi, he questioned whether the press had irreparably damaged its relationship with viewers by chasing ratings instead of truth.

“I wonder if, in media, they’ve squandered some of that based on those incentives,” Stewart said, referencing the media’s rush to declare “Mueller time” and promise Trump’s imminent downfall at every turn.

He continued: “There’s always that rush of, like, ‘Now we’ve got Trump, and the Mueller report, and it’s Mueller time,’ and all these things. And the hype machine that generates that… raises an expectation of its audience.”

A Dopamine Rush That Led Nowhere

Velshi acknowledged the “dopamine rush” the media gave its audience—a rush that ultimately crashed when the promised impeachment and indictments never materialized. Stewart compared it to a hamster wheel that numbed viewers to reality.

“The more you run on that hamster wheel… I wonder if that begins to numb your audience to consequence. And is that where the trust has been lost?” Stewart asked.

This is exactly what happened. For years, CNN, MSNBC, and legacy newspapers promised smoking guns and bombshells that would end Trump’s presidency. They breathlessly reported every anonymous leak and speculative theory as if it were gospel truth.

Breaking News: Everything Is Breaking News

Velshi admitted the media’s obsession with making “the world’s on fire all the time” with constant “breaking news” alerts has become counterproductive. Translation: they cried wolf so many times that Americans stopped listening.

“It can’t all be about this is the thing that’s going to take Trump down,” Velshi said, finally grasping what should have been obvious from the start. He added that the media’s singular focus on destroying Trump meant ignoring actual systemic issues.

The Reckoning Republicans Predicted

This confession validates everything conservatives have been saying since 2016. The Russia collusion narrative was always a political witch hunt dressed up as journalism. The Steele dossier was opposition research paid for by Hillary Clinton’s campaign. The Mueller investigation found no collusion. The impeachment was partisan theater.

Yet the media ran with these stories for years, sacrificing objectivity on the altar of anti-Trump hysteria. They abandoned any pretense of fairness or accuracy in their obsession with removing a duly elected president.

Trust Shattered Beyond Repair

The damage is done. According to recent polling, trust in mainstream media has plummeted to historic lows. Americans across the political spectrum recognize that legacy outlets prioritize narrative over truth and activism over journalism.

Stewart’s admission won’t restore that trust. The media made their choice when they became an arm of the Democratic Party’s resistance movement. They transformed journalism into propaganda, and now they’re reaping the consequences.

The Movement They Created

Velshi noted with concern that “35% of Americans trust nothing and want to tear it all down.” He framed this as a problem to be fixed. But perhaps these Americans are simply responding rationally to institutions that have repeatedly lied to them.

When the press abandons objectivity, when they promise accountability that never comes, when they cry “breaking news” at every minor development—they create the very skepticism they now lament.

The media didn’t just squander trust. They weaponized it against half the country and burned it to the ground. Stewart’s belated acknowledgment changes nothing. The American people have already rendered their verdict on the fourth estate, and no amount of soul-searching will reverse it.

The Russia hoax wasn’t journalism—it was activism masquerading as news. And the trust deficit facing legacy media today is the price they’re paying for that betrayal.
