Without borders, we lose our nation. That’s a hard truth echoed even by far-left Senator Bernie Sanders during a recent appearance on the Tim Dillon show.
“[Donald] Trump did a better job. I don’t like Trump, but we should have a secure border,” Sanders asserted on October 22. He didn’t mince words: “It ain’t that hard to do. [Joe] Biden didn’t do it.” This admission underscores a crucial reality about national security that Democrats are increasingly ignoring.
Sanders’ rare acknowledgment of the necessity for borders is a glaring contrast to the dominant narrative within the Democratic Party. The party is now heavily influenced by a radical faction that prioritizes the interests of foreigners over their own citizens. This shift has left traditionalists like Sanders sidelined, especially as he seeks support for his national campaigns.
Just a few years ago, in 2015, Sanders dismissed open borders as a “Koch brothers proposal.” His clear stance reflected a commitment to protecting American workers from the detrimental effects of unregulated immigration. Yet today, he finds himself capitulating to the very progressives he once stood against.
Sanders’ past comments on open borders showcased his understanding of economic realities. He firmly argued that the concept is a ploy designed to flood the workforce with cheap labor, driving down wages for American citizens. “We have to work with the rest of the industrialized world to address international poverty,” he stated, but added that we must not make Americans poorer in the process.
The truth is straightforward: open borders threaten American wages and job security. We need a strong, secure border to ensure that American workers have bargaining power, allowing them to earn fair wages in a competitive labor market. A robust labor market compels employers to innovate and invest in productivity, ultimately leading to higher earnings for all Americans.
Clear borders also prevent government and corporate leaders from masking their failures—such as poor education policies or lack of investment—by relying on an influx of foreign workers. Instead, they should be addressing the root causes of these issues and fostering homegrown solutions.
This misguided focus on prioritizing migrants over American citizens was on full display when Rep. Nancy Pelosi recently stated, “The people of San Francisco will continue to stand with the patriotic immigrants who are the constant reinvigoration of America.” This perspective reveals the troubling trend among progressives who elevate the interests of non-citizens above their constituents’ needs.
President Donald Trump addressed the border crisis exacerbated by the Biden administration, but the work is far from finished. The challenges posed by airport migrants, legal migration, and the overwhelming use of foreign visa workers, like H-1B holders, remain critical issues that need to be tackled decisively.
America needs leadership that prioritizes its citizens and reinstates the sanctity of our borders. We must protect our national identity and ensure prosperity is built from the ground up, starting with a secure and manageable immigration policy.
