In a shocking breach of trust, the illegal immigrant superintendent of Des Moines Public Schools, Ian Andre Roberts, was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after fleeing from law enforcement. This individual, who claimed to have six children with five mothers on his immigration paperwork, was already facing a deportation order. What’s more alarming is that despite his questionable legal status and a prior weapons charge, he was entrusted with the education of our children.

Roberts, a Guyanese national, overstayed his student visa, which he received back in 1999. His desperate attempt to secure legal standing collapsed when his immigration application was denied. Now, he faces serious repercussions, including the revocation of his superintendent license and administrative leave from his position.

During his arrest, Roberts fled but was soon located. Law enforcement discovered a loaded handgun, $3,000 in cash, and a fixed-blade knife in his possession. These are not mere possessions; they are clear indicators of a man who poses a public safety threat. The severity of this situation demands accountability from those who allowed a man with such a troubling background access to a position of authority within our schools.

ICE officials have raised critical questions about how a criminal illegal immigrant was permitted to serve in such a significant role, especially with a prior order of removal on record. This should be a wake-up call for every parent in that school district. Our institutions must prioritize safety and legal compliance over unchecked immigration policy failures.

The Iowa Board of Educational Examiners has made the right decision by revoking Roberts’s superintendent license. There must be assurances that proper background checks and employment verifications are conducted rigorously in the future. Trust in our educational system hinges on it. This incident underscores the need for stricter immigration enforcement policies to ensure that those who violate our laws do not exploit our systems. We cannot and should not tolerate any compromise on the safety and integrity of our children’s education.
