Texas recently faced a catastrophic weather event, with nearly a foot of rain causing severe flash flooding across multiple regions, including West Texas and the Hill Country. This unparalleled natural disaster has put our state resilience to the ultimate test, but Texas is rising to the challenge.
In the early hours of Independence Day, the Guadalupe River surged dramatically, rising 26 feet in just 45 minutes. This unforgiving downpour left devastation in its wake, notably impacting Camp Mystic, a Christian camp for girls, where 27 campers were reported missing. Tragically, we now know that some of these young girls have lost their lives, including 9-year-old Janie Hunt.
Our first responders have mobilized with determination and efficiency. More than 1,000 rescue personnel, equipped with over 800 vehicles, have heroically engaged in search-and-rescue efforts. The Kerr County Sheriff’s Office reported evacuating over 850 individuals and recovering the bodies of 27 victims, among them nine children.
Governor Greg Abbott wasted no time in declaring a disaster across 15 counties, emphasizing that a united Texas must stand strong in the face of adversity. “We as a state, we as a community, need God more than ever,” he said, capturing the spirit of resilience and hope that defines our great state.
Support is pouring in from all corners, with local, state, and federal resources working tirelessly to aid victims and families. President Trump has expressed unwavering commitment, assuring Texas leaders that Washington stands ready to provide whatever assistance is necessary. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem is activating critical resources, including the Coast Guard and FEMA, to expedite safety measures for the affected.
In addition to governmental support, there’s a remarkable community response. Organizations and individuals are stepping up to provide aid, demonstrating the spirit of Texans helping Texans. The Houston Texans NFL team has pledged significant resources, underscoring a collective commitment to recovery.
As this story continues to develop, we must remain vigilant, united, and prayerful for those affected by this tragedy. It is through our unwavering faith and resilience that we will rebuild and recover from this extraordinary catastrophe. Texas will persevere.
