A veteran U.S. intelligence officer has leveled explosive accusations against former CIA Director John Brennan, charging that Brennan and his Obama-era allies mounted a covert operation to influence not one but two presidential elections. Thomas Speciale asserts that career spies manipulated intelligence assessments, suppressed dissenting analysis, and publicly smeared truthful reporting—all to tilt the field against Donald Trump in 2016 and again in 2020.
Speciale confronted Brennan at George Mason University on Oct. 30, demanding answers for two damning questions. First, why did Brennan endorse the fabricated Steele dossier—despite warnings from seasoned analysts—that claimed Vladimir Putin favored Trump? Second, why did Brennan and 50 other ex-intel chiefs sign a 2020 letter branding the Hunter Biden laptop story as “Russian disinformation,” a claim later disproven?
“This wasn’t a mistake. It was an offensive counterintelligence operation against all of America,” Speciale declared. “They weaponized their own agencies to undermine our democracy.”
Speciale, a former DIA and ODNI officer who challenged for a Virginia Senate seat in 2020, warned that the time for gentle inquiries is long past. “These officials have already lost their clearances. Their reputations lie in tatters. Now they must face real accountability.”
He revealed that two signatories on the anti-Biden letter admitted to him they joined only out of personal favors or confusion over conflicting laptop versions. “If you can get career officers to cast doubt on a legitimate news story, you can sway elections,” Speciale said.
Speciale insists the Justice Department must open what he calls an “open-kimono investigation” into Brennan, Clapper, Comey and other top spies. “This can’t be about revenge. It must be about restoring public trust in our intelligence community,” he emphasized.
Central to Speciale’s case is a Dec. 22, 2016 email chain, declassified this summer, in which then-DNI James Clapper urged Brennan’s CIA, the NSA and the FBI to “be on the same page” in the Russia-interference assessment—even after NSA Director Michael Rogers flagged that the underlying intelligence didn’t support the Kremlin’s supposed preference for Trump.
“No senior intel leader would ever say, ‘This needs to be a team sport,’ unless the goal was political,” Speciale said. “They forced a flawed conclusion in spite of conflicting evidence.”
A 2020 congressional report confirmed Brennan pushed through a “substandard” assessment that Putin “aspired” to help Trump win, overruling veteran officers who warned the dossier lacked basic tradecraft. According to insiders, Brennan’s response was chilling: “Yes, but doesn’t it ring true?”
In July, another whistleblower surfaced, testifying that Obama officials pressured him to endorse the same election-interference judgment. “They silenced honest reporting to manipulate an election,” Speciale said. “The government has no right to do that.”
Speciale also pointed to former Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard’s release of additional declassified documents, which show Brennan, Clapper, and Comey orchestrated a “team effort” to draft the 2017 Intelligence Community Assessment. Yet none of the assembled evidence held up under scrutiny.
“Brennan’s outbursts calling my questions ‘disinformation’ only prove he knew the truth would destroy his carefully crafted narrative,” Speciale added.
The former CIA director’s defenders insist his actions were guided by national security concerns. But Speciale—and a growing chorus of conservative and non-partisan experts—see something darker: a seditious conspiracy by unelected officials to defame, derail and defeat a legitimate president.
“Congress and the Justice Department must act,” Speciale concluded. “If we allow intelligence agencies to pick winners and losers in our elections, we will have surrendered the very backbone of our Republic.”
