Government Shutdown: Time for Immediate Action
The ongoing government shutdown, exacerbated by political games, has left over 800,000 federal employees without pay—and it is unacceptable. The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) is making it clear: Congress must pass a clean stopgap measure immediately. The time for debate and delays is over.
AFGE President Everett Kelley has boldly stated, “Both political parties have made their point, and still, there is no clear end in sight.” Now is the moment for decisive action. We cannot afford to let bureaucracy and partisan demands jeopardize the livelihoods of hard-working Americans.
“Pass a clean continuing resolution and end this shutdown today. No half measures, and no gamesmanship.” These words should be a rallying cry for all who believe in getting our government back on track without unnecessary conditions or negotiations. Republicans have consistently pushed for a straightforward solution—one that funds the government through November 21—free of any strings attached.
However, Senate Democrats have stood in the way, opting for a different strategy. They have blocked the proposed clean spending measure, instead insisting on costly healthcare policy concessions before they will consider reopening the government. This tactic is nothing short of a political maneuver that puts their agenda before the needs of American workers.
The stakes have never been higher. Federal employees facing financial uncertainty deserve immediate action, not political posturing. It is time for Congress to put the American people first and stop playing games with our government.
