“Having always the hammer, if you will, of investigation, of losing federal funding for research and programs, as well as having lawsuits potentially brought by the Department of Justice are certainly things that they bear in mind,” McMahon declared in a bombshell warning that should send shockwaves through Cambridge.

Following the Columbia Blueprint

The path forward for Harvard is crystal clear. Columbia University already showed how it’s done when administrators agreed to a $220 million settlement and dismantled policies that violated Jewish students’ civil rights. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology shut down entire DEI offices to prove good faith.

These institutions recognized reality: the federal government will no longer subsidize discrimination, no matter how it’s packaged.

Harvard, however, continues to resist. The university has engaged in protracted legal battles, fighting to maintain funding even as it allegedly violates the very laws that make it eligible for federal grants. In May 2025, HHS yanked $2.2 billion in federal grants after Harvard refused to comply with non-discrimination requirements. A liberal judge temporarily restored that funding—a decision the administration rightfully appealed.

The Department of Education launched multiple investigations into Harvard examining alleged anti-Semitism and race-based admissions policies. The Department of Justice sued the university for withholding admissions data.

This coordinated approach demonstrates what effective governance looks like. Multiple agencies working in concert to enforce the law and protect civil rights—not selectively, but universally.

The Window Dressing Problem

McMahon’s most devastating observation cuts to the heart of what’s really happening on campuses across America: “What we have seen as a result of a lot of the action that we have taken is there have been civics institutes set up on many of the campuses where civics is taught, history of our country is taught, and less of the ideology.”

Progress? Perhaps. But McMahon isn’t naive.
