This isn’t mere unfortunate timing. It’s emblematic of a broader contempt that Duwaji has demonstrated repeatedly toward the nation her husband now helps govern.

The Dallas-raised, Dubai-educated Syrian-American artist has cultivated a lengthy record of America-bashing that would make any patriotic New Yorker’s blood boil. Her since-deleted social media posts reveal a woman who celebrated Palestinian terror groups, attacked U.S. service members as participants in “imperialist wars,” and accused American soldiers of “mercilessly slaughtering 3rd world civilians.”

In one particularly vile 2015 Tumblr repost, she declared that American soldiers “are not brave nor are they fighting for anyone’s freedom” but instead “fighting to maintain American hegemony.”

Champagne Socialism on Full Display

Conservative commentator Arynne Wexler exposed Duwaji’s escape from America’s birthday celebration, posting airport photos with the pointed observation: “Funny how when @ZohranKMamdani was telling New Yorkers to lower their AC his wife Rama Duwaji was boarding a flight to party in Mallorca.”

Wexler’s description hits the mark: “Champagne socialists.”

While her husband lectured struggling New Yorkers to set their thermostats to a sweltering 78 degrees during the city’s first major heat wave—even as City Hall temperatures plummeted to a frigid 54 degrees—his wife jetted off to European luxury.

Round-trip flights to Palma currently run nearly $1,000, not including the $3,400 retreat fee. That’s real money for working New Yorkers sweating through the summer in apartments they’re being told to keep uncomfortably warm.

Missing the Moment

Duwaji’s absence becomes even more glaring considering what she’s missing. America’s 250th anniversary represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to celebrate the greatest experiment in human freedom the world has ever known.

Councilwoman Joann Ariola didn’t mince words: “Nothing says ‘America 250’ quite like skipping the celebration for a Mediterranean vacation, but I am not surprised because she has made her hatred for America very evident.”

Councilman Frank Morano framed it as a fundamental failure of civic duty: “This was a moment to show up for the city and for the country, and she missed it.”

Back in New York, Mayor Mamdani delivered his own version of a Fourth of July address that managed to insult the occasion it purported to honor. His 15-minute speech from City Hall—delivered while sitting at George Washington’s former desk, no less—spent more time decrying capitalism and America’s foreign wars than celebrating our nation’s achievements.

The silver-spoon socialist then attended Saturday’s Sail4th 250 International Parade of Sail on Governors Island, projecting patriotism while his wife basked in Mediterranean sunshine thousands of miles away.

When Duwaji’s offensive social media history first surfaced in the spring, Mamdani attempted to shield her from scrutiny by claiming she holds no formal position in his administration. That’s a convenient dodge that insults New Yorkers’ intelligence.

The First Lady of America’s largest city occupies a position of influence and represents the administration whether she draws a salary or not. Her choices reflect on the mayor, his judgment, and his values.

The Mayor’s Office confirmed that Duwaji traveled without her taxpayer-funded NYPD security detail—a small mercy for New York taxpayers, but hardly exculpatory.
