DISGRACEFUL: Manhattan DA Drops Assault Charge Against Thug Who Hurled Ice-Packed Snowballs at NYPD Officers

Two police officers were hospitalized with facial lacerations after being pelted with ice and rock-filled projectiles—and Manhattan’s far-left District Attorney won’t even prosecute their attacker for assault.

Alvin Bragg’s office announced it will abandon assault charges against 27-year-old Gusmane Coulibaly, the man arrested for participating in a vicious mob attack on New York’s Finest at Washington Square Park earlier this week. Instead, prosecutors will only pursue watered-down charges of harassment and a misdemeanor obstruction count.

This is exactly the kind of soft-on-crime approach that has turned America’s greatest city into a playground for criminals and anarchists.

A Repeat Offender Gets Another Pass

Here’s what makes this decision even more outrageous: Coulibaly was arrested less than three weeks ago for attempted robbery in the transit system. He’s a habitual offender who clearly has no respect for law and order—and Bragg’s office is essentially giving him a slap on the wrist for assaulting police officers.

The NYPD arrested Coulibaly on Thursday after identifying him as one of the primary agitators in Monday’s attack, where a lawless mob surrounded officers and bombarded them with projectiles disguised as harmless snowballs.

Union Leaders Expose the Truth About “Snowballs”

Patrick Hendry, president of the New York City Police Benevolent Association—which represents over 50,000 active and retired NYPD officers—didn’t mince words about what really happened.

The mob packed rocks inside the snowballs before launching them at police officers, Hendry revealed. He demanded answers from prosecutors about their inexcusable decision to drop the assault charge.

“Why wasn’t assault charged? Why was harassment charged? Why do they feel that that didn’t cause an injury to a police officer, which he clearly, clearly has an injury below his eye?” Hendry asked pointedly.

Those aren’t rhetorical questions. They deserve real answers from an office that appears more interested in protecting criminals than the men and women who risk their lives every day to keep New Yorkers safe.

Prosecutors Admit They Won’t Even Try

Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Victoria Notaro told the court that prosecutors would have difficulty proving Coulibaly was responsible for the officers’ injuries.

Read that again. They’re not saying he’s innocent. They’re admitting they simply don’t want to put in the work to hold him accountable.

This is prosecutorial malpractice, plain and simple.

Socialist Mayor Provides Cover for Criminals

The district attorney’s shameful decision came shortly after New York City’s democratic socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani minimized the violent attack, describing it as nothing more than “kids at a snowball fight.”

Mamdani’s dismissive attitude set the tone for this miscarriage of justice. His spokeswoman doubled down Thursday, declaring that the mayor doesn’t believe any actions during Monday’s assault “rise to the level of criminal charges.”

“The videos he saw showed a snowball fight that got out of hand,” spokeswoman Dora Pekec claimed, apparently unconcerned that two officers required hospital treatment for their injuries.

This is the same mayor who ran on a platform of “reimagining” public safety. Well, New Yorkers are seeing exactly what that means: injured cops, emboldened criminals, and city leaders who refuse to call violence what it is.

Even Democrats Can’t Stomach This Weakness

The mayor’s position is so extreme that even fellow Democrats have broken ranks. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch called the mob’s actions “criminal”—using clear, direct language that apparently escapes the mayor’s vocabulary.

Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul also rejected Mamdani’s characterization, stating unequivocally that it is “never acceptable to throw anything at a police officer.”

When you’ve lost Kathy Hochul on a law enforcement issue, you know you’ve veered dangerously far to the left.

The Real Victims Here

Let’s be absolutely clear about who suffered in this incident: two police officers who were simply doing their jobs. They were surrounded by a hostile mob, pelted with ice and rocks, and sent to the hospital with lacerations to their faces.

These officers represent the thin blue line that stands between order and chaos in our cities. They deserve our unwavering support, not mealy-mouthed excuses from elected officials who care more about their progressive credentials than public safety.

A Dangerous Message to Criminals

By refusing to prosecute Coulibaly to the fullest extent of the law, Bragg’s office is sending a crystal-clear message to every thug, anarchist, and anti-police agitator in New York City: you can attack police officers and face virtually no consequences.

This is how lawlessness becomes normalized. This is how great cities descend into chaos.

Progressive prosecutors like Bragg have created a two-tiered justice system where ordinary citizens who defend themselves face the book being thrown at them, while repeat offenders who assault police officers get chance after chance to terrorize communities.

Three Suspects Still at Large

Adding insult to injury, three other suspects involved in the attack remain wanted by police. Given Bragg’s track record, there’s little reason to believe they’ll face serious consequences even if apprehended.

The NYPD is doing its job, making arrests and building cases. But what’s the point when prosecutors won’t follow through?

New Yorkers Deserve Better

The people of New York City deserve prosecutors who will stand with law enforcement, not against them. They deserve a mayor who will condemn violence against police officers without qualification. They deserve a justice system that actually pursues justice.

Instead, they’re getting weak-kneed officials more concerned with appeasing the far-left “defund the police” crowd than protecting the dedicated public servants who keep their city running.

This case represents everything wrong with progressive governance in America’s cities. Until voters demand accountability and elect leaders who support law and order, attacks like this will continue—and the criminals will keep walking free.

The officers who were injured deserve justice. The NYPD deserves support. And Gusmane Coulibaly deserves to face the full consequences of his actions.

Anything less is a betrayal of the rule of law.
