The Democratic Socialist mayoral candidate and her husband Kyle closed on the lavish Manor Park property on April 17, according to DC Office of Tax and Revenue records. The purchase price was nearly double the average home value in the nation’s capital and almost $500,000 more than the typical residence in that zip code.

The “Rules for Thee, Not for Me” Playbook

This is textbook progressive elitism. George has built her entire mayoral campaign around attacking the very lifestyle she’s now embracing with both arms wide open.

The Tudor-style residence spans 3,122 square feet across three levels. It features four bedrooms, five bathrooms, a chef’s kitchen with a waterfall island, vaulted ceilings in the primary suite, a finished basement — and yes, a luxury sauna.

The home sits in an upscale residential enclave described as “an especially attractive area for families with children” — exactly the kind of exclusive neighborhood George publicly rails against in her stump speeches and policy papers.

Zoning Rules That Don’t Apply to Socialists

Here’s where the irony becomes almost too rich to believe: George’s new mansion is situated in a residential zone that explicitly “discourages multi-household development.”

That’s right. The very zoning restrictions she wants to eliminate everywhere else are apparently just fine when they protect her own property values and neighborhood character.

Apparently, that traumatic experience of displacement didn’t prevent her from purchasing a home in precisely the type of affluent, single-family neighborhood she claims perpetuates segregation.

The Real Cost of Socialist Fantasy

George’s housing agenda isn’t just hypocritical — it’s financially reckless and would devastate DC taxpayers.

Building just one affordable housing unit in Washington now costs upwards of $1.2 million. George’s plan to construct tens of thousands of new units would impose an astronomical burden on the District’s budget. Her proposed solution? “Leverage our pension funds” — a suggestion that immediately drew fire from the DC Police Union and anyone else concerned about fiscal responsibility.

Her opponent, former DC Council member Kenyan McDuffie, has put forward a far more realistic plan to build 12,000 new housing units and preserve 20,000 existing affordable units over four years.

George’s campaign has been frantically courting NYC mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, desperately seeking his endorsement to energize Washington’s “Diet Commie Corridor,” as one Democratic insider colorfully described the city’s far-left activist base.

National labor unions including the AFL-CIO and AFSCME have been working overtime as intermediaries, trying to broker a Mamdani endorsement and public appearance at a DC campaign event. They lecture working families about consumption and sustainability from their million-dollar homes. They demand dense housing developments in other people’s neighborhoods while ensuring their own remains pristinely exclusive. They propose ruinous spending programs paid for with other people’s money and retirement savings.

George currently leads McDuffie 36% to 25% among likely Democratic primary voters. If she wins on June 16, DC residents will learn the hard way what happens when socialist rhetoric collides with governing reality.

The Tudor-style mansion in Manor Park will still be there, of course — protected by the very zoning laws George wants to abolish for everyone else.

That’s the progressive promise in a nutshell: champagne socialism for the anointed few, and cramped, government-subsidized housing for the masses who pay the bills.

The Democratic primary is June 16. DC voters should ask themselves whether they want a mayor who practices what she preaches — or one who preaches socialism from a $1.2 million single-family home.
