Texas is facing a staggering healthcare crisis linked to illegal immigration, with over 100,000 patients admitting to their undocumented status in just a few months. This revelation underscores the pressing challenges that our border policies have inflicted on the Lone Star State’s healthcare system.
Since the implementation of new legislation requiring hospitals to inquire about patients’ legal residency, Texas has uncovered a troubling trend—a 2.3 percent rate of self-identified illegal immigrants among hospital patients. But let’s be clear: this figure is likely an underestimate. With a troubling 12.9 percent of patients refusing to disclose their status, it’s reasonable to conclude that many of those withholding information are also here illegally.
The health implications are significant. Texas taxpayers are burdened with an estimated $434 million spent on healthcare for illegal immigrants during this reporting period alone—a number that is almost certainly understated. The impact of illegal immigration on state resources is unsustainable, and our health services are feeling the strain.
As Governor Greg Abbott stated, “Texans should NOT have to foot the bill for illegal immigrants’ healthcare.” His directive to collect and report costs is an essential step in holding accountable those who have enacted disastrous open-border policies. It’s high time the Biden administration acknowledges this fiscal impact and provides relief to Texas.
Unfortunately, not all hospitals are complying with the new reporting requirements—140 hospitals have yet to provide necessary data. This noncompliance hampers our ability to fully understand the extent of the financial burden we are shouldering as a state.
The numbers tell a grim story. Texas has the highest uninsured rate in the nation at 17%. This year alone, hospitals in Texas have absorbed $8.1 billion in charity care. This situation cannot continue unchecked.
Texas is not alone in facing these challenges. Florida has recognized similar issues and has also mandated reporting for hospitals regarding illegal immigration. Their findings indicate that illegal immigrants have racked up $660 million in unpaid hospital bills.
This issue transcends politics; it is one of pragmatism and responsibility. We must safeguard tax dollars while ensuring that citizens receive the care they deserve. We demand accountability and action to secure our borders and protect our healthcare system. Our state’s future depends on it.
