An elderly woman was brutally attacked in Chicago last month, suffering a broken knee at the hands of a 49-year-old panhandler. This shocking incident occurred when the victim, 82 years old, refused to give the assailant money outside a McDonald’s. Such violence against our seniors is utterly unacceptable.

Dion Rance, the perpetrator, approached the woman near a drive-through on West Wilson Avenue. Surveillance footage reportedly captures him following her before forcefully pushing her to the ground, leaving her in excruciating pain. This is a stark reminder of the dangers our communities face when respect for law and order deteriorates.

A good Samaritan came to the victim’s aid, and she was transported to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center with serious injuries. The police wasted no time; they quickly identified Rance from the footage and arrested him days later in Andersonville.

Rance offered to police a disturbing justification for his actions, claiming he reacted after an alleged racial slur used against him by the woman. This excuse, however, does little to absolve him of his violent behavior. Notably, while he attempted to defend himself with claims of racism, he failed to recognize that the victim spoke Japanese, not Chinese as he alleged.

Judge James Murphy III has taken the matter seriously, detaining Rance on charges of aggravated battery against a senior and aggravated battery in a public place. This is a clear message: violence—especially against the vulnerable—will not be tolerated. Rance remains behind bars, and justice must be served in this case.

It’s time for our communities to stand firm against such madness. We must uphold the law, protect our elders, and ensure that incidents like these do not become the norm. The safety of our neighborhoods depends on it.
