Senate Democrats have orchestrated a government shutdown, leaving our active-duty service members and essential civilian personnel to work without pay. This reckless move not only undermines our military’s commitment but also places unnecessary strain on our national security.

As a result of the Senate’s failure to act, roughly 406,000 crucial civilian employees within the Department of War will be required to report for duty without compensation. This is outrageous and reflects a profound disregard for those who dedicate their lives to defending our freedoms. Non-essential civilian staff will face furloughs, but those on the front lines deserve better than to be left in financial limbo.

The Department of War has provided contingency guidance, highlighting that even in the face of shutdowns, operations critical to our nation’s security must continue. Funds from the summer reconciliation bill can still be utilized for essential priorities, including securing our southern border and supporting ongoing military operations. Our national security cannot afford disruptions; we need stability and accountability.

Concerns are mounting regarding the financial impact of this shutdown on our service members. While paychecks on October 1 will remain unaffected, future pay periods—including those on October 15—may be jeopardized. Reporting indicates that many service members are already feeling the pinch, and credit unions across the country are preparing for potential disruptions in loan repayments and other financial obligations. It’s imperative that we stand by our troops during this time.

In response to the Democrat-induced chaos, Republican Rep. Jen Kiggans has bravely introduced the “Pay Our Troops Act of 2026.” This legislation would ensure that our service members and the Coast Guard continue to receive their paychecks, even amidst the political maneuvering of Democrats. Unfortunately, this bill did not make it through in time, and the House is now in recess until October 7.

The blame squarely lies with Senate Democrats, who had no realistic plan to prevent this shutdown. Only three Democrats—Sens. John Fetterman, Catherine Cortez Masto, and Angus King—chose to align with Republicans in support of the spending bill. With a vote of 55 to 45, the bill failed to meet the required 60 votes, signaling a blatant party-line failure to put the interests of the nation first.

Americans expect their elected officials to prioritize the needs of our military and ensure operational continuity. It’s time for responsible leadership to step up and put an end to this shutdown saga—the stakes are simply too high.
