During an appearance on CNN News Central, Shaheen interrupted host Kate Bolduan to “correct” the record. “I was never one of those people who pushed to end the shutdown on ICE,” she insisted with apparent certainty.

The problem? That’s simply not true.

Shaheen was indeed part of a small group of Democrats who broke from the party majority months ago, refusing to hold the government shutdown hostage over demands to overhaul ICE. Now, facing criticism about the consequences of that political stalemate, she’s attempting to scrub her role from the record entirely.

Blame-Shifting While Agents Are Under Fire

The senator’s revisionist history came in response to legitimate concerns raised by Border Czar Tom Homan. With ICE agents involved in shootings in Maine and Texas, Homan has rightly pointed out that the Democratic shutdown delayed critical safety equipment—including body cameras that protect both agents and the public.

Rather than acknowledge the real-world consequences of her party’s obstruction, Shaheen pivoted to attacking the Trump administration. “They’ve had plenty of money. They should have done this months ago,” she claimed, conveniently ignoring that her own party created the funding delays through their shutdown tactics.
