Celebrating the Fourth of July has become too perilous for cities in the Los Angeles area, resulting in the cancellation of festive events. Why? Because local governments cowered in fear of enforcement actions by U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement (ICE). This isn’t merely a precaution; it’s a blatant response to political pressures and an affront to our independence.
Instead of upholding the values of our nation, municipalities like Bell Gardens have opted to abandon cherished traditions. They’ve turned canceling Independence Day events into a statement against the Trump administration’s immigration policies. A social media announcement from Bell Gardens explicitly cited “an abundance of caution” regarding ICE activity, effectively denying residents their constitutional right to celebrate.
The irony is staggering. While local governments cower, activists seized the opportunity to stage “Sick-of-ICE, Sick-of-Trump” protests, defying federal enforcement actions. Organized by the Party for Socialism and Liberation, these protests demonstrated a stark contrast between those committed to preserving civic pride and those seeking to undermine it. Hundreds blocked the 6th Street Bridge, celebrating their defiance while the very spirit of national independence was snuffed out in nearby celebrations.
This doesn’t just stop in Los Angeles; cities across the region, including El Sereno and Boyle Heights, followed suit, effectively surrendering to fear. Los Angeles City Councilwoman Ysabel Jurado lamented that public gatherings pose risks, claiming, “This is not the time to host large public gatherings.” Yet, her statements fail to address why similar fears didn’t blanket events like the Pride parade, which attracted over 100,000 attendees just weeks prior.
It’s clear that this isn’t about safety; it’s about yielding to political correctness at the expense of American traditions. We must not allow ourselves to be cowed by political agendas that strip us of our freedoms. As Republicans, we must stand firm in our values and demand that every citizen can celebrate our nation’s birthday without fear of discriminatory enforcement actions. The Fourth of July is a day for unyielding pride—let’s reclaim it.
