Antisemitic Hatred Erupts at San Francisco Press Conference as Socialist Protesters Chant “Tax the Jews”

A simple press conference about tax reform in San Francisco descended into naked antisemitism Wednesday when far-left protesters openly chanted “Tax the Jews” for over two minutes while city officials stood mere feet away.

The shocking display of hatred unfolded outside a construction site where Mayor Daniel Lurie and Supervisor Bilal Mahmood were unveiling bipartisan legislation to reform real estate transfer taxes and spur housing development. What began as typical socialist agitation quickly revealed the ugly bigotry festering within America’s far-left activist circles.

Democratic Socialists Bring Antisemitic Vitriol to Economic Policy Event

Protesters affiliated with the San Francisco chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America initially launched into predictable “Tax the rich” chants. But the anti-capitalist theater rapidly devolved into explicitly antisemitic hatred targeting Jews specifically.

Multiple witnesses confirmed that at least one individual repeatedly shouted “Tax the Jews” while the group’s demonstration spiraled into Israel-related attacks. The vile display continued uninterrupted for approximately two minutes.

This wasn’t a momentary slip or isolated incident. This was sustained, deliberate antisemitic harassment at a public event focused on creating economic opportunity and jobs for San Franciscans.

Lurie Calls Out Antisemitism While DSA Offers Weak Denials

Mayor Lurie, who is Jewish, didn’t mince words in his condemnation of the hatred directed at his community.

“Suggesting that Jews are wealthy is a tired trope, and targeting our community at an event focused on creating economic opportunity for San Franciscans is decidedly antisemitic,” Lurie declared on social media.

He continued: “I will never accept hate directed at the Jewish community or any community in our city. Those are not San Francisco values—we’re better than that.”

The DSA’s San Francisco chapter scrambled to distance itself from the antisemitic chants, claiming the woman shouting “Tax the Jews” wasn’t part of their organized group and that members asked her to stop.

That explanation rings hollow. Witnesses report the hateful chants continued for roughly two minutes before “petering out” on their own. No one in the protest group forcefully shut down the antisemitism. No one walked away. The socialist demonstrators created the environment where this hatred flourished.

Labor Leaders Condemn the Disgusting Display

Rudy Gonzalez, head of the San Francisco Building and Construction Trades Council, didn’t pull punches in calling out the Democratic Socialists of America’s role in the incident.

“During today’s press conference, individuals identifying themselves with the Democratic Socialists of America disrupted the event with antisemitic chants,” Gonzalez wrote on Instagram.

“As a father and a husband in an interfaith home, I found what was shouted today deeply disturbing. Hate directed at any community is wrong. It undermines the solidarity that working people depend on.”

One horrified witness described the surreal moment to reporters: “It was an, ‘are you hearing what I’m hearing?’ moment.”

The Far Left’s Antisemitism Problem Can No Longer Be Ignored

This incident exposes what conservatives have warned about for years: the radical left’s increasingly brazen antisemitism masked as anti-capitalism and anti-Israel activism.

The progression is always the same. It starts with “tax the rich” and “corporate greed.” Then it morphs into attacks on Israel. Finally, the mask slips completely and the hatred targets Jews explicitly.

These aren’t isolated extremists. These are mainstream progressive activists whose ideology inevitably leads them to scapegoat specific communities. The Democratic Socialists of America have chapters across the country and exercise significant influence within the Democratic Party’s progressive wing.

Economic Reform Buried Under Hatred

The actual purpose of Wednesday’s press conference—a genuine bipartisan effort to revitalize San Francisco’s struggling economy—was completely overshadowed by far-left hatred.

The coalition of city officials, labor leaders, and business advocates had assembled to announce legislation that would reduce transfer tax rates on housing projects and downtown sales. The plan promises to create jobs and reduce construction costs by $32,850 per unit.

Supervisor Mahmood, who co-authored the legislation, joined the broad coalition including the San Francisco Building and Construction Trades Council and the Chamber of Commerce in pushing reforms designed to help the city recover economically.

These are exactly the kind of practical, job-creating policies that should unite officials across the political spectrum. Instead, socialist agitators successfully derailed the conversation with antisemitic bile.

San Francisco Faces a Choice

This incident crystallizes the choice facing San Francisco and cities across America. Will civic leaders tolerate the normalization of antisemitic hatred from far-left activists? Or will they draw clear lines and exclude those who traffic in bigotry from the political conversation?

The Democratic Socialists’ weak disavowal isn’t enough. Their protesters created the environment. Their ideology provided the framework. Their presence enabled the hatred.

Mayor Lurie deserves credit for speaking clearly and forcefully against antisemitism. Other Democratic leaders should follow his example and publicly distance themselves from the DSA and similar organizations that repeatedly foster environments where this hatred flourishes.

The Jewish community deserves better than platitudes. Working-class San Franciscans deserve economic policies debated on their merits, not drowned out by socialist hatred. And American cities deserve leadership willing to confront antisemitism wherever it appears—especially when it comes from the political left.

What happened in San Francisco Wednesday wasn’t just another protest gone wrong. It was a warning sign of the hatred brewing within America’s far-left movements. Ignoring it won’t make it disappear.
