The Houthi Threat: A Clear and Present Danger

The Houthis present not just a nuisance, but a serious and imminent threat. This Iranian-backed militia has consistently targeted global shipping lanes and civilian infrastructure, wreaking havoc on regional stability. The situation requires immediate and decisive action—failure to act emboldens these extremists.

When I served as a U.S. Army Reserve Intelligence Officer in Saudi Arabia, I witnessed the Houthi threat firsthand. Their hostile actions put our allies in peril and fueled a dangerous environment. It was a catalyst for my commitment to confront this menace head-on, a commitment that I solidified through my early legislative efforts.

Let’s be unequivocal: the Houthis are violent extremists, not mere political actors seeking dialogue. They’ve usurped territory in Yemen, leaving millions to suffer under their brutal regime while posing a direct risk to neighboring nations. Their partnership with Iran provides them with financial and military support, amplifying the danger they pose not just locally, but globally.

These terrorists are part of a broader Iranian proxy network aimed at destabilizing the region and targeting American lives. This year alone, Iran-backed militia attacks have led to the loss of American servicemen’s lives. The threat is real and expanding, as evidenced by their audacious declarations to target U.S. oil firms.

In response, I introduced H.R. 1250—critical legislation designed to designate the Houthis as a foreign terrorist organization. This bill provides essential tools: sanctions, financial restrictions, and necessary actions to cripple their operations. The consensus is clear: leadership targeting and financial disruption are essential strategies against these terrorists.

Why prioritize this now? Because every moment of inaction allows the Houthis to strengthen their grip and wreak havoc. Their recent disruptions account for a significant portion of global shipping traffic, contributing directly to rising inflation and affecting American families’ purchasing power. The stakes couldn’t be higher.

Some may argue that strong actions risk escalation or hinder diplomacy, but let’s be clear: pressure cultivates peace, not weakness. The Houthis have shown relentless aggression, demonstrating they will not respond to half-hearted measures. By labeling them terrorists, we strengthen our hand in negotiations and affirm that America stands firm against such threats.

The Houthis mistakenly believe they can outlast our resolve. America has weathered tougher storms and emerged victorious. By remaining steadfast and committed to action, we send a strong message: we will hold terrorists accountable and defend our interests vigorously.

H.R. 1250 is not just a piece of legislation; it’s a commitment to protect American lives and uphold global stability. The United States will not surrender the Red Sea or accept terrorism as a norm. We will confront this threat with unwavering determination—because failure is not an option. Together, we can ensure that no extremist feels emboldened to threaten our safety or disrupt our prosperity without consequence.

Congress must act now, and I will continue to fight to make sure our promise to hold the Houthis accountable is realized.
