53 House Democrats Just Voted to Shield Iran From Terrorism Designation—After Unanimously Supporting It Under Biden
Fifty-three House Democrats refused to acknowledge Iran as the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism on Thursday—a designation these same lawmakers enthusiastically endorsed just three years ago when a Democrat occupied the White House.
The only variable that changed wasn’t Iran’s behavior. It was the president’s party affiliation.
The Numbers Tell a Damning Story
In January 2023, with Joe Biden still warming the Oval Office chair, the House condemned Iran as the premier global terrorism sponsor by a staggering 420–1 vote. Every single Democrat present supported that resolution. The lone dissenter? Republican Thomas Massie of Kentucky.
Fast forward to Thursday’s vote on House Resolution 1099—a non-binding measure reaffirming the exact same designation the United States has maintained since 1984—and suddenly 53 Democrats discovered reasons to oppose what they previously considered uncontroversial.
The resolution still passed 372–53, with two voting “present” and three absent. But the partisan breakdown reveals everything Americans need to know about Democratic priorities in the Trump era.
A Party Divided by Hatred, Not Principle
Republicans voted unanimously in favor: 215–0. Not a single Republican congressman declined to state the obvious fact that Iran sponsors terrorism worldwide.
Democrats split dramatically: 157 voted yes, 53 voted no, and two couldn’t even commit to a position.
What changed about Iran between January 2023 and now? Did the regime suddenly dismantle Hezbollah? Stop funding Hamas? Cease uranium enrichment? Release American hostages? Apologize for decades of “Death to America” chants?
Of course not.
The “No” Caucus: Where Anti-Trump Sentiment Trumps National Security
The 53 Democrats who voted against reaffirming Iran’s terrorism designation read like a progressive wish list: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, Maxine Waters, and Ayanna Pressley all made the cut.
The Squad was well-represented, naturally. But so were plenty of Democrats who fancy themselves moderates—lawmakers who represent swing districts and supposedly care about appearing reasonable to their constituents.
The full roster includes: Donald Beyer (VA), Suzanne Bonamici (OR), André Carson (IN), Greg Casar (TX), Joaquin Castro (TX), Yvette Clarke (NY), Steve Cohen (TN), Danny K. Davis (IL), Maxine Dexter (OR), Lloyd Doggett (TX), Dwight Evans (PA), Lizzie Fletcher (TX), Valerie Foushee (NC), Maxwell Frost (FL), Robert Garcia (CA), Jesús “Chuy” García (IL), Al Green (TX), Raúl Grijalva (AZ), Val Hoyle (OR), Jared Huffman (CA), Sara Jacobs (CA), Pramila Jayapal (WA), Hank Johnson (GA), Robin Kelly (IL), Ro Khanna (CA), Raja Krishnamoorthi (IL), Summer Lee (PA), Sarah McBride (DE), Morgan McGarvey (KY), Jim McGovern (MA), LaMonica McIver (NJ), James Menefee (IL), Rob Menendez (NJ), Gwen Moore (WI), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY), Ilhan Omar (MN), Chellie Pingree (ME), Mark Pocan (WI), Ayanna Pressley (MA), Delia Ramirez (IL), Emily Randall (WA), Luz Rivas (CA), Linda Sánchez (CA), Jan Schakowsky (IL), Lateefah Simon (CA), Mark Takano (CA), Rashida Tlaib (MI), Lori Trahan (MA), Lauren Underwood (IL), Nydia Velázquez (NY), Maxine Waters (CA), Bonnie Watson Coleman (NJ), and Nikema Williams (GA).
Remember these names. They just went on record refusing to acknowledge a basic geopolitical reality that their own party unanimously accepted three years ago.
Republicans Call Out the Obvious
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt wasted no time highlighting the hypocrisy, noting that administrations from both parties have consistently recognized Iran’s role as the world’s foremost terrorism sponsor.
Rep. Brandon Gill (R-TX) didn’t mince words about the Democrats’ motivation.
“They’re totally going off the cliff because of how much they hate the president,” Gill declared. “The House voted on something substantially similar three years ago and nearly everyone supported it. Now you have 53 Democrats who won’t vote for a resolution that simply states Iran is the leading state sponsor of terrorism in the world.”
House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) took it further, arguing that Democrats who opposed the measure effectively provided cover for Tehran’s murderous regime.
“By denying this basic fact, these radical Democrats are defending the murderous Iranian regime and standing against America,” Scalise said.
He’s not wrong. When you refuse to call terrorism what it is because doing so might align you with a president you despise, you’ve lost the plot entirely.
The Excuse: “It’s Politically Motivated”
Some Democrats attempted damage control by claiming the resolution was designed to justify Trump’s military posture toward Iran.
Rep. Lateefah Simon (D-CA) posted on Facebook that she opposed the measure because it supposedly contained “inaccuracies” and was crafted to “justify the president’s actions.”
That’s a convenient deflection. The resolution simply reaffirmed a designation that’s been official U.S. policy since 1984—during the Reagan administration, continued through Bush, Clinton, Bush again, Obama, Trump, Biden, and now Trump again.
If the resolution contained factual inaccuracies about Iran’s terrorism sponsorship, Simon didn’t bother identifying them. Neither did any of her 52 colleagues who voted no.
Iran Hasn’t Changed. Democrats Have.
This vote exposes something more troubling than simple partisan opposition: it reveals how completely Trump Derangement Syndrome has consumed portions of the Democratic caucus.
Iran didn’t suddenly become peaceful. The regime continues funding terrorist proxies throughout the Middle East, developing nuclear capabilities, holding Americans hostage, and chanting “Death to America” at state-sponsored rallies.
What changed was the political calculation. Supporting a resolution championed under a Republican president—even one stating obvious facts about America’s enemies—became unacceptable to 53 Democrats.
This isn’t principled opposition. It’s reflexive partisanship masquerading as conscience.
The Message to Tehran
America’s enemies are watching. They notice when dozens of U.S. lawmakers suddenly refuse to acknowledge established facts because political winds shifted.
The Iranian regime now knows that a significant bloc of the Democratic caucus will provide them political cover—not because Iran’s behavior improved, but because these lawmakers’ hatred of Trump outweighs their commitment to basic national security consensus.
That’s not just embarrassing. It’s dangerous.
When American politicians can’t maintain consistent positions on terrorism sponsorship across administrations, it signals weakness and division to adversaries who exploit both.
The Bottom Line
Fifty-three House Democrats just demonstrated they’d rather oppose Trump than stand unified against the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism.
They supported an identical position under Biden. They abandoned it under Trump. Iran didn’t change—but their willingness to put country before party certainly did.
Voters in these districts should ask their representatives a simple question: What exactly did Iran do between January 2023 and now to earn your benefit of the doubt?
The answer, of course, is nothing. And that tells you everything you need to know about where these lawmakers’ priorities truly lie.
