Just when you thought Anthony Volpe’s downward spiral had hit rock bottom, he managed to dig even deeper.
As the Yankees left the field after the fourth inning at Citi Field, Volpe hurled a ball toward Aaron Judge, who was unaware and received a direct hit near his right eye. This blunder not only broke Judge’s sunglasses but also left him bleeding, highlighting the mounting pressure on Volpe.

After the incident, Judge bravely returned for the bottom of the fifth inning with a bandage covering his injured eye. Meanwhile, Volpe is struggling, having been replaced by pinch-hitter Trent Grisham just a day prior in a critical game — the Yankees’ fifth straight loss.

In light of these events, Volpe spoke about the frustrations he faces: “The competitor in you wants to be out there and help the team… What is [in my control] is just putting in the work and earning those at-bats. Earning every at-bat.”
It’s time for Volpe to rise to the occasion or risk becoming a liability on the field. The spotlight is on him, and the team needs results, not excuses. The Yankees won’t settle for mediocrity, and neither should Volpe.
