Say Cheese, Comrade!
New York City’s mayoral front-runner, Zohran Mamdani, was caught grinning ear to ear with members of the Cuban delegation to the United Nations during a recent trip to Albany. This is not just a photo op; it signifies a deeper troubling trend among the Democratic Socialist faction that threatens to undermine our nation’s values.
Mamdani, a Queens state assemblyman, is not merely a bystander in this ideological battle. He’s at the forefront, boasting alliances with lawmakers who openly advocate for easing sanctions on the oppressive communist regime in Cuba. It’s part of a larger pattern where far-left politicians, such as former Mayor Bill de Blasio, have romanticized totalitarian regimes—de Blasio even honeymooned in Cuba.
Independent candidate Andrew Cuomo, while a rival to Mamdani, shows no hesitance in cozying up to Cuba either, having led a trade mission to the island after sanctions were slightly relaxed during the Obama administration. It’s clear: the left isn’t just flirting with dangerous ideologies; they’re embracing them.
Republican U.S. Representative Nicole Malliotakis, whose mother fled the horrors of Cuba, rightly condemned Mamdani’s actions. “It’s no surprise Zohran was thrilled to welcome a delegation representing Cuba’s communist regime. He’s made Karl Marx’s communist playbook a core part of his campaign,” she said bluntly, highlighting the chilling realities of Mamdani’s proposed policies that threaten private ownership and entrepreneurial spirit.
Mamdani recently stated in an interview that he recognizes both Nicolás Maduro and Miguel Díaz-Canel as dictators responsible for oppression and violence. Yet, he absurdly blames the U.S. blockade for the suffering in Cuba, completely ignoring the regime’s own culpability. His rhetoric pits U.S. policies as inhumane while dismissing the oppressive tactics of communist leaders.
The picture with the Cuban delegation, which Mamdani and Democratic Brooklyn state Senator Jabari Brisport proudly posted, is emblematic of their ideology. Brisport has openly stated that the U.S. sanctions have caused untold harm and that it is time to extend a hand to our so-called neighbors. This sort of thinking is not only naive; it’s dangerous.
We must remember that these lawmakers are part of a larger movement that seeks to romanticize oppression while vilifying the very principles that have made our nation great. The Democratic Socialists of America recently returned from Cuba, ostensibly to support local workers amid their hardships. Yet, their statements reveal an unsettling detachment from reality—a glossy veneer over the grim conditions created by the regime they hitch their wagons to.
We cannot allow such ideologies to take root in our city. The citizens of New York deserve leaders who are committed to freedom, accountability, and dignity—not those who celebrate tyranny under the guise of social justice. We must stand firm and reject the allure of socialism that has led to destruction in Cuba and beyond.
